Rhiannon

Hi, my forum name is Rhiannon.  I received an email from SKB announcing the change to the forum name (I like it!) and it reminded me that I haven't posted here in quite a while.

Back around 2014, I was first diagnosed as pre-diabetic.  I had already been experiencing tingling in my feet (worse on the left) and redness on the front of my lower legs, which I didn't want to think about.  I call it "head in the sand" syndrome.  Or, "maybe if I ignore it, it will go away."  Well, neither did, and my pre-diabetic diagnosis became a diagnosis of type II diabetes.  I was given a prescription for a low dose of Metformin, and a testing kit to track my blood glucose readings.  I'm a Kaiser patient, so I also met with a nutritionist who gave me guidelines on what to eat.  (Note:  Sadly, they were not suggestions to eat low carb, high fat.)  I was also instructed to attend a one-time class on diabetes.  Fortunately for me, I also searched online for some help.  I saw suggestions to drink apple cider vinegar, and other supposed cures.  Lucky for me, I stumbled upon an earlier forum where SKB and others were moderators.  That was the first time I ever heard that eating good fat and decreasing carb intake was beneficial to keeping blood glucose in control.  It was contrary to all I'd ever heard or read growing up.  I'd like to give a special shout out to Shanny, one of the moderators on that board.  Her no nonsense advice and attitude were particularly helpful to me and I will always be grateful to her.

So I've been living with diabetes for approaching 6 years now.  The tingling in my feet is mostly gone.  I think I might have some permanent but slight nerve damage in my left foot but it doesn't really bother me.  The redness in my lower legs went away quite quickly once I started eating LCHF.  I have my blood tested every six months and my results are good.  I have my eyes tested once a year and so far, no signs of trouble there either.

Now, eating keto is a big thing so I have found lots of inspiration and recipes via youtube videos.  I recently watched an interesting documentary called The Magic Pill (I think it's a couple of years old now) and really enjoyed seeing how eating low carb, high fat has improved the lives of those involved.

Finally, some personal details.  I'm a female, age 58, have lost 50 pounds so far on my LCHF diabetic journey, live in northern California, have a grown son who is in the Marines, love to play bingo, and work part-time as a family law assistant.  I guess that's enough of an introduction :)

Hello Rhianon,

Welcome back to the forum. a few days ago, foxl also peeped in and made a few posts. It's always good to reconnect with old friends and reinforce some of the things we know.

I'm sad to say that Shanny is not well and has been admitted to a Life Care Center.
