I was diagnosed with diabetes last week.  I kind of expected it would happen at some point as my mom was diagnosed at age 60.  I'm 62 so not totally surprised.  It is all very confusing to me and I hardly know where to start.  I've been doing a lot of reading online as I really got no help from my doctor.  I'm looking forward to learning more and meeting people here.

I am new here too, Kelly. My own mom was the same, she was diagnosed some time in her late 60's and I guess I should have seen it coming, but doctors have always been watching me for heart disease like hers, but nobody ever said anything about diabetes.

Hi Kelly,

Welcome to the forum. It is said that there is a genetic link to diabetes, and maybe it's true. But most of the times, since families tend to have the same eating habits & patterns, the illness does tend to favour families. But worry not, you have come to the right place, to learn (a lot) about the disease. Ask all the questions that come to your mind. Someone or the other will always be there to help you out with your queries.

For starters, we've got a few articles on our website, which should help you learn some of the basics. Links to the website & a couple of our fundamental articles (theories) are placed at the extreme top header to the right of your screen. Clicking on those will lead you there. Read a lot, ask a lot, learn a lot, adapt & make some changes.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the welcomes.  I plan to spend a lot of time this weekend on reading the links.  I am also going to do some googling for low carb recipes.

Hello kelly,

I'm also new here and learning a few things rapidly. I'm sure you will also have a fruitful association with the nice people over here.

Welcome, Kelly.  I depend most of the time on a helping of some meat (thin pork chops tonight), and two vegetables for dinner.  Boiled eggs or stuffed ones for b'fast with bacon if i have it cooked (baked in oven) for b'fast and broth and salad or cottage cheese for lunch w/salad.  It works for me to keep it very simple.  I like to have cleaned veggies on hand for the salads or out of hand around.  KISS is my moto.

We have a growing recipe board here too, Kelly, so feel free to browse.

We're having pork chops tonight too, and a cauliflower side dish. I just cook crumbled up cauliflower in butter or bacon grease and add diced onion & green pepper. Season as spicy as you like.

Kelly

Thanks Pat and Shanny for the suggestions.  I'm still learning my way around here, I'll check out the recipes for sure.

The recipe topic is my favourite too but I'm reading more and not writing much. For now, it's all a learning curve.

Hi Kelly,
Welcome, I am 65 and have been diagnosed as a type II diabetic for 9 yrs.   I found the LCHF model early last year and after reading and studying the Bloodsugar 101.com website I decided to follow the LCHF lifestyle beginning 5/1/15.   I think the hardest part was getting a good file of low recipes/ meal plans that suited my tastes.  But as time went on I found many options and also learned how to eat fast food or restaurant food and still stay within the norms of LCHF! I found my limits were strictly do to what I did not know or understand.  As my knowledge grew, my options increased ten-fold.

So knowledge about LCHF and Testing to your meter what you eat, are key to being successful on LCHF.

When I started last May my A1c was at 7.2 (BS), blood pressure(BP) at 135/92, Cholesterol a bit high for someone who was not diabetic making it real high for a diabetic. and my weight was 320lbs (Morbidly obese)!

Within 2 months my BP was 130/80 weight was coming down my BS was rarely above 110....

These trends continued and as of October of 2015, 6 months after starting LCHF, my A1c was 5.8 (Yahoo joined the 5% club), by BP was 120/75, Cholesterol on target for diabetics, and my weight was down to 270lbs.   I had dropped 50 lbs with only 50 to go....

What's not to like ....do your reading and learn how you to can join those of us who have control of our diabetes!

Oh my starsign!  How true about it being a learning curve!!  Sometimes my head is just spinning from all of it!

Wow Timewise, what a story!  I hope I can follow in your footsteps in time. Congratulations on your success!
