I was on the SMF formum (which has nothing to do with diabetes) and saw a post with a link to this forum, so I thought I would join.

I am an 81 year old Vietnam vet, Ham radio operator and amateur web site developer.  I've had diabetes for over 30 years and it is pretty well under control as long as I remember to take my insulin.

I have congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease and degenerative back disease so I am not suppose to eat much carbs, salt or protein and my back problem and heart problems makes it very difficult to walk more than about 100 yards.  I do get up every hour or so and walk back and forth from one end of the house to the other and can get in about 3000 steps a day.  I recently bought a vertical stepper machine and can do about 30 steps on that but hope to slowly increase it. My A1c is at about 7.4.

I'm the one who handles the Forum s/w and backend operations and I am the one who is at SMF. We are glad to have you here as our numbers have really dwindled over the years. I assume you are a Type 2 diabetic on insulin. But, we would like to hear more from you. You are welcome to share anything that you are comfortable doing.

I'm really sorry to learn of all your health problems and as a fellow diabetic I understand that this condition does cause a multitude of other health issues. For starters I would recommend that you read our Articles on the Home page and also go through some of our Forum Links in the Right Panel.

Welcome once again and be sure to log in and befriend our other members.

Welcome Ronbo51.  Glad you stopped by.  I am 79 and also a Vietnam Vet.  At our age we are all dealing with some problems with our health but you seem to be doing the best you can.  The fact that you are getting as much walking and moving as you can are very worthwhile.  I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1993 and learned how to manage my diabetes from forums like this about 10 years ago.  My A1c is 5% and I do work to keep it in the 5% range.  I am also having degenerative back problems and right now I have been dealing with sciatica for several weeks.
Please feel free to discuss anything you may want to and ask any questions you may have.
