QuotePeople with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are prone to tooth decay, and a new study from Rutgers may explain why: reduced strength and durability of enamel and dentin, the hard substance under enamel that gives structure to teeth.

Well, I have to admit my teeth are bad. I wish I had dental ins and could afford implants. But my teeth have been bad most of my life so don't know how much is diabetes related.

Well, IMO both are carb related and that is the co-relation.

Could be but I have been very careful about carbs since dx in 2012. Since a child we never had any dental coverage and after DH passed in 1997, I haven't had any so again I don't know I can blame it on diabetes...

The only problem I have with this study is that they only say that the mice with diabetes were affected but no information on how high the bg or A1c for these mice.  It leads a reader to assume that anyone with diabetes is subject to this but doesn't have anything to do with a person that is diabetic and has good control.  In my case I have not had any tooth decay for years but I did many years ago long before I was diagnosed.  I do have a problem with plaque build up and have a cleaning every three months instead of the usual six months.  Fortunately I do have dental insurance but it will not pay anything toward implants and they are quite expensive.
