Type 2 Diabetes Alters the Behavior of Discs in the Vertebral Column

QuoteType 2 diabetes alters the behavior of discs in the vertebral column, making them stiffer, and also causes the discs to change shape earlier than normal. As a result, the disc's ability to withstand pressure is compromised. This is one of the findings of a new study in rodents from a team of engineers and physicians from the University of California San Diego, UC Davis, UCSF and the University of Utah.

This synopsis looks interesting. I do have issues with my back mostly from things I did at a younger age, but that bad fall in Dec 2022 did fracture a disc, so I would be interested to see if the resulting misshape of my disc is partly from my diabetes along with the fall. Not that it matters at this point...

Too tired to focus tonight, I will read it tomorrow.

Well I do have back problems and my discs are compressed and this is the major cause of my sciatica and I do have back pain if I am on my feet very long.  I think that it is from age but how much comes from my diabetes, if any, I don't know.

That is the question. I too have many of the issues you mention Wally, minus the sciatica. I know I have abused/overworked my back in my youth. Now as I age I expect repercussions from that, and the major injury to my disc when I fell. So it really is hard to determine how much of the pain now, comes from aging and past injuries, or diabetes. But it is good they are investigating this.
