QuoteThere are many important reasons for keeping cuts and sores clean, but new research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania shows that a certain bug, Alcaligenes faecalis (A. faecalis), can facilitate healing of hard-to-treat wounds among people with diabetes. While there are many studies done on potentially harmful bacteria in wounds, the researchers discovered that A. faecalis, a bacterium found in many types of chronic wounds, actually boosts healing of diabetic wounds. The researchers found that the beneficial bacterium can promote skin cell movements that are essential for wound closure by inhibiting enzymes that are over-produced in people with diabetes.

I always wonder what they are using for their definition of "people with diabetes"?  I have diabetes and my wound healing is quite good but then I keep my bg in good control so what do they use for an example of people with diabetes.  You can have diabetes and keep your A1c at the 5% range or you can have an A1c of 8% but we are all lumped together as the same "people with diabetes" and they never seem to take that into consideration.

Again, I agree with you Wally! They need to set/share the A1c # they are basing these findings on. For myself even though lately I have strayed into the 6% A1c range, I still heal quite quickly with no infections ever involved. I think a person's natural abilities to heal, be they good or bad have just as much affect on the outcome ultimately. Of course a person whose diabetes is ragingly out of control is at much greater risk, but to lump all diabetics in one group just doesn't make a lot of sense.

It is good if this bacteria does help I'm not denying that. Heck, I know a lady whose father was a diabetic with a terrible infection in his leg that medicines didn't help whose dog licked the wound for days and it began to heal! What ever works!

Oh wow. Something new to learn for today. I will keep that in mind. Maybe it was the same bacterium

This was a long time ago in CA. The woman was of German descent. Maybe it was an old folk healing method, I don't know. But some of them cannot be completely discounted. Maybe it is the bacterium they are working with now.
