Read a lot from the site and the forum posts / links. I've finally decided to take the plunge. I'm starting to go LC but MF (medium, not high fat). I know you are all very dedicated to HF, but please be kind. In time, maybe I'll push the demons outta my mind and go HF.

Julie,
I appreciate you decision to get on board with us on LC!  Many of us, including myself, had real fear at the thought of increasing our fat intake.  Both my Dad's father and my Dad had heart attacks at 65!  I started following LCHF in 2015 when I turned "65"!

You see I had tried following low carb meal plans many, many times in an effort to lose weight, before I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes.   I stuck with them for a few months, but always fell 'off the wagon' due to cravings for carbs.....!  Over the years I just came to the conclusion that I was not a person who could diet!

When I found this website in April of 2015, I read and studied the reading and actually got the book Blood Sugar 101.  I did tons of research outside of that as the science on Cholesterol and heart disease is ever changing.  Today their is a lot of science suggesting that the link between eating fat and heart disease is not linked.    So for me gaining knowledge doing my own research made me comfortable trying it out, while keeping tabs through my Doctor on the state of my Cholesterol, as I tried increasing my fat intake while reducing my carbs.  I started following LCHF on May 1, 2015.

At six months I saw a slight increase in my Cholesterol numbers, but I did not go above the guidelines my doctor uses.    At one year I was back to my normal on Cholesterol, but my weight was down over 14% or 50lbs.  My blood pressure had dropped from borderline at 130/89 to 120/75.

That first summer, just to be extra safe I had a heart scan done which showed some calcium.  Then I had a stress test completed where they watched my heart work under stress.   That surprised me as it came back 100% perfect with no arterial blockages, and I was free to do whatever I want to do.

So you see by being knowledgeable, doing all the reading and research you can do, you can overcome this fear of flying (eating fats)!   Because those of us who have walked this road know that your long-term chance of learning to live healthy with diabetes is likely to fail, if you do not substitute your low carbs with fats.  I am sure some may tell us they did it without fats, but most all I have known on this site and other sites agree the model LCHF works!

Julie,
We all need to start somewhere. Timewise has given you good advice. I would like to congratulate you on your first step.
My life is based on a true story.

Julie, I wish you every success.  I recently got my blood work done and my numbers are all within "normal" range, including my cholesterol.  I've been eating LCHF for at least 2 years.  But it is quite a change and I think easing into it can make the transition easier.
