Pump warranties and insurance

I'm trying to switch pumps and am finding considerable issues with insurance coverage.

Basically, my insurance as well as most will only pay for a new pump every four years and Medicare every five. The only exceptions are for some change in medical conditions that require a change in manufacturer.

My current pump (Omnipod) is not covered by Medicare so when that becomes my sole insurer the various supplies won't be covered. I just got a new one last winter so I've got over three years left. My wife whose employer provides our commercial insurance is likely to retire before then so I've got a problem.

I'll be seeing my endocrinologist shortly in hopes of establishing medical necessity for a new pump. I should be able to do it as a result of my cancer, but there will be hoops to jump through.

Type 1s need to watch those warranties carefully as it could be easy to find yourself using MDIs if you find yourself similarly caught.

Thanks for that information John. This only goes to show how T1 & T2 are different conditions with different issues. I hope you endo gives you whatever is necessary for the change in pump.

Problem solved.

I have a GREAT endocrinologist who I saw yesterday. He's writing a detailed letter plus calling Tandem to resolve any issues. Apparently he's had a number of patients with Omnipod problems and has done this before. Wow!

Wishing you the best of luck and I hope your Pod problems will soon be a thing of the past.

That's great news John. I wish everyone would find cooperative Drs like that all the time.
