Sleep

We've discussed sleep in many threads of the forum. I read this article and thought of sharing it. Apparently there are 3 types of sleep - monophasic, biphasic & polyphasic. I'm certainly in the biphasic category. I sleep for 4-5 hours in the first phase and an hour or two in the second one, provided I don't get up and start doing computer stuff.

I'm totally monophasic and a sleepoholic.

Interesting article. Not sure where I fall in the description.  I'm a night owl, some nights up well after 3AM, others fall asleep in the recliner around 2AM, some nights wake up and it is 4:30AM. I'm sleeping, don't know what phase..so far guess all OK

I'm definitely polyphasic,  but how to break it down is the trick. I sleep when I get drowsy, and it may be as long as 3 or 4 hours - and it's never any 30-minute process - I'll sleep for at least a couple hours. But this is partly the product of having endless hours available throughout the day and no other obligations on my time.

Another factor is I can't usually fall asleep without my CPAP on. It's my 'blankie', I guess. I have one machine by the bed upstairs, and another one by the sofa downstairs. I'm always close to a CPAP machine!  ;D  And I use earplugs too . . . so with CPAP & earplugs, I usually sleep well.

I don't know what phase I am as I sleep with a cpap also.  I try going to bed by 11 p.m. and usually wake at 1 or 2 a.m., sleep again until maybe 6 a.m.  I would like to sleep longer, but it seems my body doesn't want to cooperate to that desire.  I rarely nap during the day because if I do, then I find I cannot sleep at night.

I am normally a monophasic sleeper and usually get about 8 hours a night.  I normally get to sleep around 9:00 PM and wake around 5-6 AM and usually sleep quite well.  Sometimes if I had a not so restful night I will take a nap sometime in the afternoon and get a good rest for 1-2 hours and it does help.  I don't do well if I try to sleep more than 8 hours at a time though.

The working hours do not permit me an afternoon nap, but I think scientifically it is a very good thing to indulge in. I love to take an afternoon nap on Sundays. It gives a recharge and an energy boost.

Last night was a biphasic one. I think knowledge is sometimes a dangerous thing. The moment I woke up in the middle of the night the thought that I'm going biphasic crept in and kept me awake for a long time.
