I wonder if you've heard of Dr. B. M. Hegde. He is quite an anti establishment and anti medication doctor and author of the best selling book "What they don't teach you in medical school."

He's out there on YouTube and TED if you want to hear one of his lectures. Yesterday I heard one and learnt that every drug has two important numbers, a NNT and ADR percentage. NNT is Number Needed to Treat and ADR is Adverse Drug Reaction.

He was talking about Statins and said that the NNT for Statins is 300. This means that if you treat 300 patients with the drug, 1 out of those will benefit from it. While the ADR percentage is 5, which means that 5% out of the other 299 will have an Adverse Reaction. Eyeopeners, those numbers, really.

My first endocrinologist was Sonya Hegde and I'm aware of another Dr. Hegde practicing at Danbury Hospital herein Connecticut. Perhaps it's simply a more common name in India than were aware of in the states. I'll have to have a look at the talks you mention.
