I am Maggie and I have diabetes. I have not been managing it very well, so I hope I can get some motivation by coming here to chat with you.

I am not so good at finding my way around websites either, so if I make mistakes, please set me straight. I will try to pay attention and learn.

Hello Maggie,

Welcome to the forum. Due to your age, I'm assuming that you are. Type 2. When you say you are not managing well, what exactly do you mean ? If you can share some fasting, PP or A1c numbers, that would help us understand you better.

I hope you have gone through the Rukes. If you have any difficulty with the forum, please peruse our FAQs. We also have many articles written by experts & veterans who have had tremendous success in managing diabetes. Some links are placed at the topmost header of this page.

Good luck

Hi Maggie,
Welcome aboard!  You have just surrounded yourself with a group of people that are going down the same roads you have traveled as far as being diabetic.   We have fun but also share experiences and knowledge, and in doing so help each other.

Tell us more about yourself....

Good Luck

Hi Maggie and welcome to the forum!!  Glad you found us and looking forward to hearing more about your journey with diabetes.

Are you on any diabetes meds? What sort of foods are you eating and what does your meter say about them?  Please check out the "eat to your meter" link at the top of the page.

If you could share some of your recent readings and A1c, as skb said, we will be able to help you even more.

Again, Welcome!!

I am taking some diabetes meds and they are metformin and glimeperide. I have trouble taking the metformin because they are very big pills, but I always take my glimeperide. I saw a thread here about managing it, meaning metformin, so I am going to try to do better at taking these big pills.

I try to eat right, and I have read about the low carb diet, so I am trying to follow that and add some fats, but I worry about losing weight with all the fats, since I have a lot of weight to lose.

I think my last A1c was 7.2 or something, and I had 175 this week when I woke up before breakfast.

Welcome, Maggie!  You need not worry about the fats...in fact, they help you lose weight!  As soon as you go into ketosis you'll burn them rather than carbs for energy and your appetite will lessen to an amazing degree.

Stay around and ask any question you want.  The only dumb question is the one not asked!

Thank you, everybody. I will keep trying even tho I struggle. After reading here so many posts I do believe this is the right way. I just have to buckle up and do it.

I forgot to test today because we slept in very late after quite an active day yesterday. I need to learn to stick to a good schedule so I can remember everything. I wonder if it would work to get up at a regular time to do the tests and pills and whatall, and go back to bed after?  Maybe I wouldnt be able to get back to sleep. That would be a bummer. I hate being robbed of sleep. But if I cant get this right, I might be robbed of other worse things.

Hi Maggie and welcome.  You have found a great place for support and help controlling diabetes.  I know it seems counter-intuitive to think of "high fat" and "good for me!" in the same sentence.  Of course, the trick is to combine high fat with low carbs.

I have found that the more routine I have in my life, the easier it is for me to make the right choices.  When my routine is disrupted, that's when I find myself looking in the fridge or the pantry and not finding a good selection of foods I can eat, so I turn to those that aren't so good for me.  I hope you will read the various helpful links here and try the LCHF way of eating.

I know the Metformin pills are big.  I'm able to swallow them all right, but when I was younger and had trouble swallowing larger pills, I used to eat them with a little bit of food, like apple sauce or a piece of bread.  (Of course, I wouldn't use either of those methods now, but maybe with a piece of cheese or some sugar free jello - something tho help you swallow the pill?)
