I read this news item and learnt that Tom Hanks is one of us. Now how do we track him down & get him to join The Pub ?

I'm aware of many Indian politicians who are diabetic. Are there any other celebrities that you are aware of ?

Paula Deen is one of us altho' she chooses the ADA diet.  With her love of butter she should give this a go!

Complications of diabetes is what actually killed legendary country singer/songwriter Waylon Jennings.  :'(

Larry King is a T2, Drew Carey is also a T2, as is Billie Jean King.  Halley Berry is a T1 diabetic as is Nick Jonas and the writer Anne Rice. (Love the Vampire stories!!)  I am sure there are many more out there.  Sad but true.

I remember when Tom Hanks announced that he had type 2 diabetes and I remember also his statement then:
"My doctor says if I can hit a target weight, I will not have Type 2 diabetes anymore," he says.
Once again we have a doctor that doesn't have a clue about diabetes or how to treat it.  To say that losing weight will cure diabetes is ignorant and to have a celebrity making that statement makes it unfortunate.  People look up to celebrities and of course we believe that they must have the best doctors and the best advice.  Now it's sad that thousands of people are sure that if they only lose some weight they will be "cured" of diabetes.  I don't blame Tom but someone needs to give him better advice.

I seem to remember Drew Carey doing the same thing . . . lost a whole bunch of weight, and when everybody was oohing & aahing about it, he explained "I'm not diabetic anymore. No medication needed".

Rhiannon

When I read that statement by Tom Hanks about what his doctor told him, I had the same reaction.  It's not just about reaching a certain weight, or else how do we explain there are diabetics in all shapes and sizes?  I hope he (or his wife) are doing lots of research of their own online, which is how I found about at LCHF.

I knew about Paula Deen being diabetic, but many of the other names are a surprise to me.

My Denver Broncos drafted a quarterback some years ago, who is now a type 1 pumper. Jay Cutler. I think he plays for the Bears now.
