The coons, lynx and coyotes are why my cat is strictly an indoor cat.  I have no doubt an eagle could carry him off also.

I have lived in this community in north central Iowa since 1981.  I did own a house until diabetes happened (10-2003) and I could not pay the payments for it and insulin.  Job also went bye bye about this time also.  It is a community declining in population - presently about 6,400.  One elementary school has closed and taken down and the middle school is scheduled to close when the addition to the high school is finished.  My two adult children are now both out of college and working for universities - one in California and one in Nebraska.

My second wife and I are renting a two bedroom apartment and are starting to find it confining as our hobbies grow.  The housing market here has not changed like it did in the rest of the country and this means buying another home is almost impossible for us.  Many that are on the market would require $20,000 or more to make them livable.  Basements and foundations are in poor condition in about 40 percent of the homes.  Many of the homes are over 90 years in age.  Some of those in poor condition are being torn down and the lots being sold to people wanting to build new homes.

I have cottonwood trees in the back and one side and aspen and fir on the other side. I have a bazillion birds, half of which I don't know the names of.  The ones I do are robins, black birds, pheasants, several varieties of ducks, kingfisher, magpies, swallows, wrens, the occasional egret, a hawk and eagle too.  They all sing just about the whole day long which I find very soothing.

Lots of wild life here too. Deer, raccoons, a fox, a lynx strolls through about every 6 weeks. I swear I have heard coyotes at night sometimes but have never seen them.

It is very quiet here if you don't count the birds singing.   ;)

To me, that sounds like a lot of fun.

It is, but the yard maintenance is getting hard for me to do on my own.  Tell you one thing, I will never live in a city again!!
