Future Diagnosis may be of 11 types

As per this researcher, the current classification & diagnosis system is inadequate and a revision is badly required in the system. His suggestions if accepted might mean 11 types of diabetes classification in the future, with each having a different treatment plan.

The above article discusses five subgroups of diabetes and essentially supports the need for reclassification of diabetes for more aggressive and defined treatment.  I am disappointed that the discussion of either article does not include the LADA or MODY classes of diabetes even though MODY is fairly well defined within itself.  Also not mentioned is chemically induced diabetes.

I think before the American Diabetes Association changes their classification, the rest of the world will change before them and force the ADA to change their classification system.  In talking with a retired endocrinologist and another doctor recently, they both agree that the ADA system is outdated and much more does need to be done to improve treatment for all types of diabetes.
