Is this a no-no?  Are all sweet and sour or Chinese, Teriyaki and Thai recipes out?  :(

It is a good idea to test your blood glucose after eating these types of food.  If you are in target range 2 hrs after eating, you may be able to get by with eating these types of food.  Many of us cannot, but your mileage may vary.

For me, honey is not a 'no-no' as I use it when I want to bring a low blood sugar back into target range and it works well for me.  As far as eating it otherwise, it does not do nice things to my blood sugar if I am in range already.

Eat to Your Meter is the best way to answer that question. I cannot tolerate any honey at all, if I want to stay in my desired BG range.

What a joy to see you back, cdncatlover! Come around more often!  ~hug~

I would say keep your blood sugar within target range even at the ONE HOUR test . . . winning this diabetes battle requires staying with range at all times. You can trust your meter - it never lies!  ;)

I've had good experiences at Mongolian BBQ because you can choose all the components of your meal including the sauces. Some places even describe the sauces so you know if they're high carb.

one time i tried it with some fruit salad
my bg went up quite a bit the next day
dont remember the exact numbers but its a no-no for me as well

I have a small teaspoon of honey sometime with fresh lime water or soda. I didn't notice any large swing in my numbers the next day.

Like SKB said, the only way to know if something is OK for you is to test with your meter.  What is horrible for me may be something you can tolerate so no one can answer that for you.  On the other hand, Honey is sugar, plain and simple, and it does not matter if it is considered "natural", it is still sugar.  Also most Chinese food, and especially sweet and sour are absolute no-no's for me and most diabetics.  I purchase a low carb, no sugar Teriyaki Sauce form Netrition for home made Chinese dishes.

Since my diagnosis, I have not had honey because I figured it would spike my BG upward.  I think honey is an amazing thing - isn't it said that honey never goes bad?  And it is used on burn victims too.  But I think it would not be good for me to ingest it unfortunately.

I know that Chinese food also spikes my BG, which is a bummer because I used to love it.

Way back when I was first dx'd, I tried Nature's Hollow SF Honey from netrition.com. (Select the brand name from column on the top left.) It is actually pretty close the the real deal.  It is made from xylitol. They also make a ketchup that is very good

Thanks for all the wonderful, informative replies. I kinda figured honey being a sugar would make it a no-no. I think I'll pass on the honey. Can't figure out why I see it in so many online diabetic recipes.  :(

Sue,

It's not just the immediately after or the next morning numbers that are of concern to me. I've studied my BG patterns extensively over the past 7 years.

I've literally observed the partitioning system work pretty well in my body. If you are glucose / glycogen starved, the first priority of the liver is to save for another day, till the glucose stocks have reached their threshold level. Therefore I may see a marginal rise in BG in the the immediate or next day numbers, but that rise will keep lingering for the next 3-4 days. Getting back my liver to "that same" glycogen status could take me well over 10 days. Therefore I've found that these sweet taste excursions are really not worth it.

However, all of the above is true for me, and may not apply to everyone else.

I haven't tried any honey since AJ's diagnosis. skb was specific, no fruits & nothing sweet. Once we ate Chinese, and their sauces are always sweetish. After the rise in AJ's numbers we have not ventured into that area as well. Yes, the meter is the best resource.

It will take my BG about 3 days to go back to normal if I eat pizza. Seems like all the good stuff is a thing of the past.  :(
