Gene Therapy holds promise

In a recent study scientists at The Pittsburg School of Medicine we're able to use Stem cells to reprogram pancreatic Alpha Cells to produce insulin just like beta cells. They found the alpha cells immune to the attack by the autoimmune system in the body. This was done in a mouse model but may also hold promise as an effective therapy in humans.
