However, this statement

It is believed that heightened blood glucose may have cancer-causing effects by leading to DNA damage.

emphasises the importance of control IMO.

Cancer is not a strong risk in my family, so it's good to know when those odds get manipulated. Heart disease is the villain for us, so I've been careful to watch for signs of that. However, a few years ago I asked my doc about it since none of those signs have exhibited either, did he think if I were going to develop any I'd have done it by now at this ripe old age, and he agreed with me that we could prob'ly stop worrying about that too!

I agree that this is one more reason to work for the best control a person can.  The thing that I don't like about articles like this is that they make a statement :

A global review involving almost 20 million people has shown that having diabetes significantly raises the risk of developing cancer, and for women the risk is even higher. 


That doesn't say anything about how bad was the control of the subjects in the study.  There is only one line in the middle that says :
It is believed that heightened blood glucose may have cancer-causing effects by leading to DNA damage.

But it doesn't address how high.  So many of these studies assume that anyone with diabetes is the same and control is not addressed.

I did have my brush with cancer in 2013. But it does run in my family, so not sure diabetes was even a cause. (I was in great control and ketogenic at the time so that may have helped.) It was caught small and early and next month I will be 5 years cancer free

Makes simple sense for cancer cells to make use of and grow with high glucose. Whether or not it leads to DNA damage and the effects of that seems interesting but doesn't obviate the need for strict glucose control.

Whether type 1, 2 or some other variant, dietary changes remain the first line of defense...
