International phone scams

No doubt most of you folks have heard about scams through various sources.  One scam that has recently come to the attention of authorities is the following phone scam.  The call can come from anywhere in the world, but often seems to be originating in the Far East Asia countries.  The call is an automated robo call and asks to speak to the head of the household, then goes on to say that their "tech service" for our computer is being discontinued.  Then they offer a 'menu' of various choices to continue their call.  They also give a 888 phone number to call them back.  Once you call them back, then you are paying for an International call which has cost some people a lot of money.  I got two such call in close proximity to each other this morning.  Fortunately I was able to "block" the second call (from the same number) and I didn't call the first number.  Caller ID just says the number they are calling from, and not the name.  Just thought you might want to be aware so you won't be surprised if you happen to receive a call you don't recognize.

This sort of thing is so prevalent nowadays that if I don't recognize the name or number I will not answer the phone, period !  If it is someone that is actually trying to get me they can leave a message.  Everyone I know or do business with is on my contacts list and if they call my phone tells me who it is.

I'm with Wally, if I don't recognize the number I don't answer. If they don't leave a message, I block the number.

Caller ID is a beautiful thing and so is call-block! Anything that comes in on the cell phone is definitely a scam since nobody is supposed to even KNOW that number. The landline is a little more known, but even that one is not well-known. We are hermits - real dyed-in-the-wool HERMITS!   `8)

Same here, although lately the scammers have taken to somehow using phones with our local area code making just caller ID trickier. Wally's right though, if I'm not sure, I let them leave a message.

This particular number is very determined.  All total I received 5 calls from this number yesterday approximately 30 minutes apart.  Don't know if the cycle will start all over again today.

I just learned how to block a caller on my iPhone.  Under recent calls just select the I next to the caller and select block this caller.  There are so many things I don't know how to do with this phone.
Robo callers can just go through random numbers and don't need your number.  It is illegal but of course they don't care.  Now, using a computer they can show any area code no matter where they are calling from so you think it is coming from someone local.

My only complaint with our call-block, is that the phone rings once before it kicks in, and that's all it takes to disturb my nap!  >:(
