According to this article the reason drug companies charge so much for insulin is because they can.  I believe this is true.

Interestingly, I believe that at least four of the major pharmaceutical companies are actually privately held by families and not even publicly traded which is a curious business model in such large enterprises. Among other things, it means they have no stockholder accountability whatsoever.

And then, of course, greed is a human characteristic since our beginnings and not likely to go away by any means...

Probably, but the thing that seems strange to me is that as long as insulin has been around there is not more generic brands available.
