I'm planning a trip into the forests from this coming Friday to Sunday. We're not going for a regular "tourist" kind of trip, but are going to be located on the peripheral part of one of the best known National Parks. There are going to be no drives (safaris) into the park, but most of the time we'll be on foot. There is a lot of tiger activity in the area lately, but I'm more keen to capture some of the tiny forest life, such as this;

This is from 2005. I have no idea what this is or what it is called. It just happened to be there when I had the proper equipment in my hands.

I'm back, but sadly have no pictures worth putting up here. Did a lot of walking through the woods at all odd hours, so I do have landscapes, but no wildlife and certainly no insects that I had intended photographing.

But I did meet a tribal out in the woods and I'd like to share his picture with you. This tribe is known as Baiga in that part of central India. He doesn't know how old he is but my estimate would be that he is well into his 70s.

The thing to note is a paste of slaked lime applied to his throat. I inquired about it and he told me that it is their traditional cure for a bad throat and cough. (Click to enlarge)

skb - I enjoyed your picture.  Did the tribesman show surprise if he saw his picture?

Since cameras now are mostly digital, we were able to show him the picture instantly. Yes he had a big grin on his face. He also requested a print of the picture, which I'm going to be doing and sending to him. I'll be frequenting this place a lot, in the coming months.

A picture is worth a 1000 words.

I have been visiting Indian forests since 1993. During those days, there was very little tourist interest in forests, wildlife etc. There were very few people who visited and behavior norms and rules were in their formative stage. Things were very easy for us and we've done most of our tiger spotting on foot. Now, there is a boom in wildlife tourism and naturally the rules have become very very strict. Gone are the days of setting foot in the forests. That is why I opted to go to this place which is located in the buffer zone located on the periphery of the core areas, yet there is freedom to do what we like.

Back home, I tell stories about my personal experience when walking through a forest nullah (stream / rivulet) trying to come across a wild tiger in his natural habitat. This trip, I thought of clicking some pictures to tell this story in a pictorial genre, because a picture is worth a 1000 words. I think I'll put up the first draft here. That will serve both purposes. You can see some of the pictures, and also help polish the draft with better language.

I'll try to post this here just to give you a laugh. This was me in 2000 when I visited your wonderful country.

Very nice. You look really good in traditional Indian wear.

The "My" in "My pictures" doesn't refer to me (skb) but to anyone who wants to post a picture.

Thanks, that's sweet. We did try to dress  in traditional clothing. I really did enjoy my month there. I brought home a few saris I thought I could wear, but alas, I could never put them on quite correctly.

A moth came sat on my window pane. I tried taking many pictures. The moth was higher than my tripod would go. Still, I managed some that are worth sharing. The trouble with extreme close-up photography is that you have one thing in focus and the rest goes out of focus. I tried with the best of 'depth of field' settings.But I'm still not happy. Here are a couple of reduced pictures.
