Taking Metformin, You Should Be Tested for Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Because of several members of the support group I belong to having needed shots for Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D, I do urge people that have been on metformin for several years to be tested.  One member had been on metformin for just over eight years and the other member had been on metformin for just over nine years.  Both had two large shots about a week apart and then when they showed just about normal they were put on a supplement and are checked four times per year for both B12 and D. 

Not everyone has vitamin D troubles, but many people with diabetes do have a vitamin D deficiency.  Because of conflicts with prescription medications, most dietary supplements should only be taken under the supervision of a knowledgeable doctor.  For many this could be a problem.
