Happy Independence Day to all American friends.

Quote from: walkerwally1 on July 04, 2021, 10:45:55 AMCalifornia has their hand out every where you look for taxes.  Here it doesn't matter how old your car is you pay a yearly registration fee although it goes down as the cars value decreases.  We also pay State and Federal tax on gasoline that is supposed to go to highway maintenance but politicians always find other things to spend it on.

Yes that is so true and a global phenomenon.

I'm told that our PM started asking people to donate to a PM Cares Fund set up to fight Covid. That fund now stands in excess of Rs. 1,000,000,000,000/-. I wonder where all that money is going to go. A major share will definitely go to the medical system.

There's something inherently inefficient in government operations of every stripe and always has been. One of my favorite examples is the State of New York which some years back decided that horse race betting was a huge pool of money they could take from its traditional neighborhood mob guys to become a state run affair. Naturally, it took only a few years for them to find ways to lose money hand over fist and drive this once thriving, albeit criminal, enterprise into bankruptcy. This exemplar is especially piquant insofar as New Yorkers habitually consider themselves smarter and more sophisticated than everyone else.

Illinois not only has license fee yearly, we also pay personal income tax as well as federal income tax.  Years ago when they built the Illinois Tollway, all that income was supposed to go to road repair and the Tollway would have paid for itself in 10 years.  The tolls at that time were supposed to be abolished and it would become a 'freeway'....did NOT happen.  People traveling I90 pay tolls daily.  Our roads are poor and you can tell when you have traveled from a neighboring state into Illinois by the condition of the roads.  Oh..and our governor's are so corrupt they manage to get themselves sent to prison for a period of time.

102 this morning.  We had stir fry last night with chicken, shrimp and vegies but I had to add a bit of rice so a bit higher than usual but it was really good.
It is going to warm up this week and we could hit 119° next Sunday, at least that is the prediction right now.  No question, that is hot.  Summer in the desert.   ~hot~
Fireworks are legal here but it is supposed to be "safe and sane" only but some don't pay any attention to that and there are always larger ones going off.  Quite a few large bangs last night but the dog made it through and it is over for another year.

Another case in point;

Some years ago, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India said (as a part of a speech) that Real Estate prices were highly inflated and that Developers should reduce their prices. Being from this industry which has been trying to make ends meet since the year 2008, I made simple calculations for a dummy project, and analyzed that gross revenues on "a" project were being shared between the developer and government in the ratio of 40 : 60, just in the form of Direct Taxes and duties. If Indirect Taxes were added to this, the government's take goes up even higher.

But, instead of reducing duties (if not taxes) they were expecting private enterprise to contribute more. The govt of the day is our larger share holder and sleeping partner which pulls our ears at their will and liking.

BTW - Raghu Rajan the ex Governor now teaches at The Univ of Chicago.

Gosh, Grammabear, keeping your politicians in jail sounds like a pretty good idea!

Well, the holiday weekend is over so its back to work on my car registration and my crummy back; both sound like fun chores and doubtless both will get resolved quickly...

126 this morning (we finished the last of the birthday cake my eldest son brought over on my birthday)  Cake was good but glad I don't make a practice of that.

It is so hot here that our outdoor chores get put off until after our evening meal around 5:30 p.m.  Last night at 10:00 p.m. it was still 90 deg F.  It might be cooler this weekend.

Tamagno - I wish you the best is resolving your back problems.  I have spinal stenosis and it can be mighty discouraging at times.  Also hope your car problems get solved smoothly.  I'm sure someone will gladly put out their hand to receive the money for the proper paperwork.  Politicians in my state ALWAYS have their hands out !!!

skb - It sounds like India might have the same mindset that many officials in government in the US have - it is always the 'middle' guy or the working class that is expected to pay more for whatever reason.

83 this morning.  It is going to get hotter this week and we will have a few days over 110° and Sunday will be the hottest then cooling down a bit next week.  Early morning is the best time here to get things done outside.  Thankfully our electrical power system was upgraded a few years ago and we don't have to deal with brown outs or rolling black outs like some areas in Southern California when air conditioning overwhelms the power grid.  It stays nice and cool inside.
Hope you get it all sorted out Tamagno.  Dealing with the DMV can be quite frustrating hear and I am sure it is where you are also.  I really hope you get an answer to your back problem.

86° was the high yesterday, it still feels warmer to me. Today's forecast is 95°/52°. This heat is really wearing me down.

Hope you get some answers soon Tamagno. I have lots of back issues and have had fusion in my cervical spine. Low back issues are a different kind of problem and surgery is not always a successful remedy. So far my low back issues are just troublesome but not debilitating.

I have a phone check in with my stock broker this afternoon. He is going to hound me about making my final arrangements again I know. I just have a really hard time thinking about it. My kids know what I want and where the $$ is and at this point that works for me...

126 this morning.

Headway is being made in the tangled saga of my car registration. Yesterday the Town's back taxes got paid (at least no penalties or interest) and I got both my requisite DMV visits scheduled (a spin off from The Plague - and a big improvement) and worked out where to get the necessary emissions testing done. So everything is set I just have to make sure I also get to the spine specialist and my oncologist.

Much too busy and not very interesting or even entertaining, but will get finished. Hopefully then an interregnum during which nothing needs attention.

Last night my pump had a 'software update' only I wasn't advised ahead of time.  The entire history of insulin administered and corrections plus basal rates was wiped out.  I was scared that I would wake up later in the night with a really high blood glucose ~ so I called Tandem customer support at a little after midnight.  What I was told is:  a unannounced software update is "rare" but that the pump would continue to work as it should because the 'internal' memory was intact.  Technology is great, but only when it doesn't give you any surprises like this.

Tamagno - I'm glad you got your DMV issues resolved or at least headed in that direction.  Hopefully by the weekend, you will find the peace and quiet you desire.

91 this morning.  Weather here is going to be pretty much the same each day for the summer, some days hotter than others.  Easy to predict.
Tamagno, I am sure you will be glad when the ordeal with the DMV is concluded.  I don't have to drive a lot anymore, it's only 3 miles across town and there is pretty much all I need within that distance.  Still, I would be at a loss if I couldn't get around.
My security camera system broke and the company has gone out of business so I bought a new system.  I did more research this time and it looks like a good one for the price.  I did get used to having the cameras.
