Quote from: walkerwally1 on July 18, 2021, 10:47:51 AM86 this morning.  It is overcast this morning and cooler but it will still get over 100°
today.  There is a fear of more wildfires in the West as we get monsoon type weather coming up from the south and bringing thunderstorms and lightening.  There are already several large fires in progress right now from California to Montana and conditions are bad for more.
Every once in a while there is a bird that hits one of our windows but I haven't seen any damage to birds or windows yet.   They do make a rather audible thump though.

I haven't visited the old forum for a long time.  Last time I found nothing interesting and haven't been back.  it seems that there is a lot more activity on social media like Facebook and Discord and the like.  I am on a couple of Facebook groups for 3D printing that have quite a large number of members.  Kind of reminds me of the old Yahoo Groups.

People in the mid-west also worry about the drought.  For the first time this year, a "high chance" of wildfires was posted and outdoor burning was not allowed.  Sometimes in the evening when the breeze has died down, we can smell smoke even though we have windows closed and the AC turned on.  I think it is sad when there isn't enough rain fall because so many living things suffer.

I have never heard of other social media besides Facebook and Twitter.  I only go on facebook for the Tandem pump groups there.  It is one place to garner information that is not available from our pcp or other doctors.

Just to be clear, when I said I was browsing, I meant, that I was browsing as a Guest. I don't have a login since their passwords were stolen and they had to change the passwords. I'm sure if I generated a new password and revisited as "skb", that would rattle a few feathers. But, I'm not interested. I just wanted to know how badly all forums are doing.

I've never had any bird come crashing into my windows, though that is something that does happen. There was a hilltop resort that I had once visited, which was located at the edge of a cliff. They had installed a large protective net cliffside because of flocks of birds committing harakiri on their windows. The explanation given was, that the strong air currents were responsible for this. I'm not sure.

154 this morning.

BigSkyGal, that's good advice to have your thyroid checked - it came as a shock when I found out I'm hypothyroid since I'm so thin so the usual tell-tales don't always apply.

I went down in the basement yesterday to look at the door window and was shocked. It's a double pane affair and my first reaction was that there was just a lot of ice build-up; thinking with my usual alacrity I quickly recalled its the middle of July and then thought it was condensation between the panes. Nope. The entire outer pane is shattered like might happen to a windshield. The door is in a spot that would be very unlikely to be struck by a tree limb or rock but its always attracted birds. As I write, though, it occurs to me that the lawn guys might have managed to blow a small rock into it when they do their clean-up with gas blowers. Still strikes me as surprisingly fragile and odd though.

Some years back I went to the "old" site and logged in with a different e-mail and user name. Didn't see anything of particular value and haven't gone back. While I do belong to a Facebook group for Tandem pumpers I never go there. Facebook is definitely not for me and I never visit even though I suppose my account is still there. I've looked at a couple others including Twitter, Linkedin, and Snapchat but all have qualities I'm just not interested in. I'll just stay here...

110 this morning.

Tamagno - It is my understanding that if you have one autoimmune disease, chances are high that you will have another autoimmune disease.  I was diagnosed hypothyroid at age 10 and one Endocrinologist felt I was diabetic long before I was actually diagnosed.

I don't know how the 'old forum' got my email address but I get a weekly report from highlighted posts (whatever that means) even though it has been many months since I snooped around there as a guest.

Late yesterday afternoon I saw a small hummingbird visit the hanging baskets of flowers on our porch.  I stood absolutely still watching him visit each flower.  They are so tiny but fascinating to watch.

84 this morning.  We only got to 100° yesterday and it was 72° this morning, the lowest for quite a while.  It is supposed to get a bit warmer today but it should stay below 110° for a while.  We actually got a little sprinkle last night but not much.  There have been thunder storms nearby and rain is welcome but lightening is still a worry.
I never had much use for Facebook before but the 3D printer community has groups on Facebook that I have used and they are quite helpful and have a large world wide following.
I had complained about feeling more tired than normal a couple of years ago and my doctor had my thyroid levels checked and all were in the normal range so that was ruled out.  Maybe just getting older is the cause.
Tamagno, I think a stray rock is probably a more likely cause.  I have had birds hit the window pretty hard with a loud thump and never had one crack.
I don't have bird feeders but I do have humming bird feeders and I really enjoy the little buggers.  There are quite a few around here and they are here year around.

120 this still smoky morning.

High yesterday was 88° a bit higher than I thought it would get. Today's forecast for here is 84°/63° but I'm going up to town to the pcp and it is warmer there than here.

Leaving in just a few minutes as I have to get my labs done before appointment. Pushing the envelope a bit, but I couldn't go Friday...

Will do some shopping while I am there so that may help the step count.

tamagno, whatever the reason for the cracked glass, it would be better to replace it with toughened glass.

Dr. Bernstein said that almost 45% of his diabetic patients were hypothyroid, mostly with the auto-immune kind, Hashimoto's. I am one of them too, and definitely Dr. B is onto something that we are not able to connect the dots yet.

Hypothyroid patients are always overweight is certainly not true. The role of the Free T3 is to improve the functioning of cells. With an underactive thyroid one is likely to feel fatigued. As with all aspects of science, IMO there is a lot to be discovered about the Thyroid gland and secretions. So far what is assumed may need a re-look and a re-vamp. I have a similar feeling about Vit-D3.

Grammabear, forum s/w (including ours) have many features, which the management decides are to be used or not. I also receive emails from the old forum about the latest posts. That, is an indication of low activity and their quest for more people to log in and participate. I have disabled such features on our Forum, because I think these mails only tend to disturb and irritate members.

138 today. I need to start with exercise as a routine if I want to see my "normal" numbers.

138 this morning - snap, SKB.

Interesting comments re: autoimmune diseases. The whole study of endocrinology is one that contains as yet many mysteries; these troubles have been in my family for as long as I can remember and I know "standard of care" has undergone significant change even in the last 20 years. Once again, such remarkably subtle balance of interaction occurs in these systems that making corrections once there is pathology is enormously challenging. It still rattles in the back of my mind that the trigger in my case was some form of tic-borne infection although most MDs won't discuss it and those who do are often tainted by an appearance of quackery.

By the way, did anyone celebrate yesterday's holiday? It was, of course, National Ice Cream Day - always the third Sunday in July so mark your calendars!

144 this morning (and I have no clue where that came from)

skb - When I first saw an Endocrinologist as an adult, the very first thing he asked me to do (after he introduced himself) was to stand up.  He then pulled out of his lab coat pocket a tape measure and measured my neck.  His reason for doing so???  He said that most people with a neck measuring 18" or more, have sleep apnea.  No one had ever mentioned that possibility to me.  He ordered a sleep apnea test and the results were positive - along with markers and a cpeptide test that indicated I was type 1 not type 2. He was the best Endocrinologist I ever saw and really intuitive.

I do not believe that all diabetic hypothyroid people are overweight.  My mother was all of 105 pounds soaking wet, diabetic with type 2, and hypothyroid.  My dad on the other hand was obese, type 2 and hypothyroid also.  I do agree there is much still to be learned about endocrinology.  Sadly my problem is opposite of Tamagno and I have excess weight that is very hard to lose.

123 early this morning. Sleepless night and up really too early. At least the smoke is somewhat better today.

80° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 84°/63° with rain and thunderstorms in the evening. Just hope no dry lightning.

Well the pcp visit was interesting. To start out I have lost 12.5 pounds. Haven't had much appetite lately. A1c was 5.2%. Thyroid Hormone:4.350 uIU/mL (Standard Range)   0.340 - 4.820 uIU/mL so appears thyroid is OK. Liver enzymes are still an the high side but they haven't changed since last year.

He asked me how often I test and I said 2-3 times a day. He said I really only need to test once a week!! No way! My Rx plan has no problem with whatever # the dr writes the script for. So I will continue as I am now.

Filling in the Medicare questions he asks me "So you have opted out of mammograms?" Say What? I don't have any breasts since my cancer surgery in 2013.Sometimes I wonder why I stay with this guy!

He doesn't think there should be any problem for me with the vaccine so will schedule an appointment. That was good news. Exhausted by the time I got home.

99 this morning.  Weather here is going to be pretty much the same each day for the rest of the week.  Sunny, clear and hot, but not hotter than normal.
I don't know what goes through a doctors mind when they say you only need to test once a week.  If that is the case then why test at all.  Just take a pill and let what happens happen. Then when you have to deal with the complications from high glucose what do they have to say about that.  I'm sure they will blame you for not controlling your bg.  When I told my doctor that I tested about 4 times a day she said that her T-1 patients didn't even test that often. She is not against it  and she said my A1c is the lowest of any of her patients but I wonder what she tells them to do about testing.
I don't really know how to interpret the thyroid testing but my doctor does have them included in my blood work.  I have T4 free, TSH and T3 total and all are in the normal range.  I don't know what Thyroid Hormone Barbara is showing but none of my tests use ulU/ml.  My TSH units is MIU/ML and that range is 0.270-4.200 and mine was 2.70.  Hard for a layperson to understand but that is why we need doctors I guess.

I don't know Wally, that is what the report says. I don't have T4 or T3 on my list at all. Sounds like your dr is more thorough than mine.

Barbara - I went to mychart where my doctor list medical test done for me online.  My TSH reading was:  2.127 uIU/mL
The lab range at that lab is:  0.300-4.000 uIU/mL.  Since my reading was 2.127 I was right in the middle.  My readings have not always been in the middle.  I was tested one time about a year ago and I was way over 4.0, closer to 5.0.  I told my doctor "I feel better when I am in the middle of that range."  So she prescribed a increased amount of thyroid medication for me which is called Levothyroxin.  If I were you, I would seek a second opinion.  It can't hurt anything and if your doctor gets annoyed, then he isn't practising good medicine.

Just for your information - I was on Amazon earlier today and saw that they sell the Boost Blood Glucose Control drinks.  I think they have chocolate, strawberry or vanilla.  I believe that the price was around $35 for 24 containers.  Maybe mention it to your gastro to see if that might be appropriate for you on those days when you aren't very hungry.
