Quote from: walkerwally1 on October 01, 2021, 10:48:26 AMWhen I got married my wife had a cat and he was quite a character.  He somehow learned to open a door by jumping up and wrapping his arms around the doorknob and actually turning the knob and kicking the door jam with his back foot to open the door.  How in the world he figured that out I will never know and I wouldn't have believed it but I watched it as he did it.
He was also intrigued by the swirling of the water in the toilet when it was flushed and would jump up on top of the toilet tank and push the flush lever and watch the water.
How in the world did he figure out how to do that ?

That is a really smart cat Wally. There are some YouTube videos on how smart Chimps and Elephants are but I think the smartest are the Dolphins.

Re my post about the 2 groups of monkeys coming across each other. After the first few minutes of chaos and trying to measure each other, the Alpha male of one group decided that it was time to recoup. He signaled for a "discussion" and I witnessed a 'conference' where Alpha Male spoke and the others listened.

That is awesome! Animals are such enigmas, we think they have no understanding of community but they continually show us otherwise.

The 'monkey' picture and story are awesome.  Monkeys are something we don't see unless we're at a Zoo.  They appear to be much smarter than given credit for being.

82 this morning.  Another nice day today and very little smoke so good to be outside.
That is quite an interesting encounter SKB.  We don't have much of a chance to see animals in the wild often and rely on documentaries from filmmakers that go out into the wild and record encounters.  Seeing it live would be much more impressive.

122 this mostly clear morning. I've been running a bit high for no dietary reason, hope I am not going to be getting sick.

65° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 72°/34°.

The 2 new kittens have learned how to climb the steps and have found the food dishes. They come after the big guys have eaten and eat the leftover kibble.  They are getting adventurous, exploring the deck.

Kittens are such fun to watch as are puppies.  My guest is leaving today and of course the pups go with him.  :(

93 this morning.  Another day without smoke so enjoying that.  The fires are still going and only partly contained and will probably burn for a lot longer.
It is fun to watch animals play.  It is interesting that playing and having fun is part of their life, especially when survival is not threatened.  My dog is three years old now and still loves to play and expects us to be involved. That and having her belly scratched.   ;D

133 this mostly blue sky morning. Danged if I know where that came from...

66° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 75°/36°.

I do get much joy out of watching the kittens romping around the yard. Only Mama will come in the house and let me pet her. The older kittens are still spooked from when I caught their sister to give to her new home. They back off when I go out to feed them and as soon as I close the door they run to the food. Maybe the 2 new kittens will be more trainable.

My son who visited this past weekend and brought his two pups, has also said his dogs love having their belly scratched.  The little one who is just 5 months old  will flop down on the floor, turn over so her little belly is exposed and wait for the belly scratches.  Her brother who is a little over 2 years old will literally flop down in front of you, and expose his belly to be scratched.  We did enjoy watching them.

Barbara - I think kittens are so fun to watch especially if they are not 'aware' you are watching them.

Co-incidentally, I was also updating my Camping Log when we were discussing animals and their behaviours. Last evening I was updating a particular trip, when I came across these pics and remembered this incident.

We were holed up in one of the living quarters of the Forest Department. About 15 meters away is a big lake. At night, as per usual practice, we had parked ourselves at the edge of the lake for a chat and a few drinks.

The entire residential area is raised about 5 feet from the ground level (lake) by means of a retaining wall. We heard some sounds from the area below and a torch light revealed this;

She was on hatching duty and had to be with her eggs which were in a small hole just below where we were sitting. She didn't mind us being there and neither did we. We all spent a couple of hours there unperturbed by each other.

skb - Wow!  That is quite an animal to be sharing space with.  Did she make any noises to let you know she was on "patrol of her eggs"?

82 this morning.  It is supposed to get to 90° today but mostly cloudy.  Unfortunately cloudy doesn't mean any chance of rain.  Today is going to be the hottest this week and by the weekend we may even be in the 70s.

Not really. She'd rather we didn't know that she was there. The only sound was from her movement when she got there.

Wow! skb, that is an amazing photo! What an experience!

My yard tigers are so much fun to watch! They climb trees and stalk/attack each other, chase bugs and play with mice when they find one. After all that they curl up in the sunshine on the deck and sleep.
