81 this morning.  There has been heavy rain and snow over a lot of Southern California and of course the mud slides in the burn areas where the fires occurred this summer.  Here we did get rain overnight but only a measly 0.11 inch so not quite a downpour.
Yeah Tamagno, Apple seems to be really chintzy on I/O  ports on their laptops.  The fact that the one I have uses the only port it has for charging also makes it really difficult to be on A/C power and connect anything like an external drive.  I am hoping that the hub I am getting will resolve the problem.  In a lot of ways it is like a tablet with a keyboard and just a more powerful processor.

91 this lightly snowing morning.

49° was the surprising high yesterday, today's forecast is 37°/28°. It didn't snow overnight but has been ever so lightly snowing most of the morning though it is barely sticking. Which is fine by me!!

I got one of those hubs when I bought my mac because it only has 2 ports and no place to read the sd card from my camera it also has 2 usb ports and 2 ports to take the place of where the hub plugs into the laptop.

Grammabear, I'd turn off both Wi-Fi and cellular in background app refresh. Some programs will run all the time if background app refresh is on thus running down the battery. (Some programs may need to be turned back on later, but this is just to check on the battery.) Along the same lines, before you charge it tonight force quit (double click Home and then swipe icons to close them) all programs. In the morning then, you can see how the charging went with presumably everything turned off. You can check in Settings under Battery for a list of apps and how much battery they used. It can be surprising applications using up resources we didn't even know about. After that, it's probably a good time to go through your apps and delete things no longer used and some uploaded to the Cloud without losing data just to free up space. Also check to see which, if any, apps have location services turned on which is another battery drainer and turn off those you can. Also check notifications to see which apps have been allowed to send notifications and turn off any you don't need. The idea is to get as few apps running in the background as possible. After all that, give the phone a "hard" restart by holding down the Home and Start buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.

Very cold up here with morning temperature well below zero and not looking much like warming up. Good day to stay indoors.

Tamagno - Thank you for all the help you wrote down.  I am not tech savvy and both my sons live out of town, so I only get to "learn" when they are home to visit.  I will print out your answer and do each thing in succession.

It is 28 deg here but we have a Winter Storm Warning for today and tomorrow.  Supposedly heavy wet snow 5-9 inches with north east winds 30-35 mph.  This is not going to be fun.  I just 'hope' we don't lose our power.  A good day to be inside - Yes!!!

90 this morning.  A bit colder with a low of 28° this morning and only 30° at 7:00 AM but the rain, for what it was worth, is out of here.  We may have a small chance for a bit of rain next Wednesday.
I did find a hub like I was hoping for that plugs directly into the USB C port and allows the charger to work and also other devices.  It has two USB 3 ports, a HDMI port and slots for SD cards so that will be useful.  I don't know why Apple is so stingy with I/O ports.  This Mac has only one Type C port and not the two that other Mac laptops have.  The 2017 Macbook was discontinued after this model and then only the Macbook Air and the Macbook Pro have been available.  It looks like the new M1 Macbooks have very little difference between the Air and the Pro and there is not much reason to pay more for the Pro now.

You could keep your laptop or PC on with his post on the screen and carry out the steps mentioned. I mean you don't need to take a print of it.

Basically you have to remember just one thing. Double press the Home button on your iPhone and then keep swiping all the open Apps in the upward direction to close them.

145 this morning.

The only way to get at all "tech savvy" (I'm not, especially) is to try things. I've often wished there existed some book or books that contained useful information, especially for Windows. I'd love to have whatever is used to train on-line techs or whatever it is they look at and refer to when answering calls. I just collect information on an as-needed basis.

At my house, I'm the one my wife asks when she's got a problem (which is often) and I don't think I'd want to be good enough to be the guy friends call with tech questions.

One of the hardest things is figuring out what in the world
someone is talking about and then providing an answer they can hear - on any topic. It's one reason I prefer to just sit and listen at social gatherings.

When it comes to social gatherings, I also prefer just to listen.  Often when people are talking about computers, they use words that to me sound like another language completely.  I wonder if there is a book called "Computers for Dummies"?  I guess if I grew up with computers, as my grandson has, then maybe I would be more comfortable around them.  Also sometimes when asked a question, the people that really know what they are talking about, will answer in a rough, abrupt manner.  So, I don't feel like bothering them.

94 this morning.  Still a bit cool with an overnight low of 29° but we are supposed to get up to around 60° today and 65° tomorrow.  It looks like no rain in sight foe the next few days.
There are a lot of books out there with all kinds of information on tech of all kinds but it is not easy often to find something on a level that is designed for someone just getting started.  There is a ton of information on the internet but it is not always easy to find.  I have been digging in to what I can find about the Macbook and there is a lot but you have to dig.  Apple does not make it easy to find guides on their products but it is there.  I also find a lot of information on Youtube.

Sure, there are many. Here's the link to a book and there is also a website where you could do some learning.

130 this morning.

Both Mac and Windows are guilty of this, but Windows especially. That is, you go to do something while following some instructions or other and get to a point at which jargon is used that's indecipherable or a step that you can't possibly know how to execute or that doesn't work. Much like doing maths without defined terms or symbols. Kids may be able to help, but generally are only facile at getting around parental controls. I'm inclined to keep something of a mental list of such things and just watch for articles that look helpful.

Of course computer jargon isn't alone here. We find the same thing with medical insurance (especially Medicare and supplements) and taxes among many. In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest that this pandemic of obfuscation is on some level intentional, but to what end I can't fathom.

Anyway, it's snowing here with the forecast warning of accumulations of a foot and a half. That's more than enough.

Tamagno - The snow that is forecast for your area is what we had two days ago.  All totaled we got between 6-8 inches depending on where you measured.  The wind direction was from the East, northeast so snow drifting made travel almost impossible.  Roads were closed overnight until plows could get to clearing them.  Be safe.

Computer jargon or medical jargon is impossible to understand unless you are an attorney.
