Quote from: Grammabear on January 31, 2021, 09:00:06 AMI wonder if there is a book called "Computers for Dummies"?  I guess if I grew up with computers, as my grandson has, then maybe I would be more comfortable around them.

Sure, there are many. Here's the link to a book and there is also a website where you could do some learning.

skb - Thank you for posting these links.  I shall look into them because it would be nice to at least understand the "language" used in describing computer things a little better.  Sometimes it is even hard to understand the language used to describe how the cell phone works.

92 this morning.  it looks like we will be warming up just a bit which is nice but no rain in sight for the next few days.  February is usually a good month for rain here but so far it doesn't look good.
I have been a Windows user since 3.1 and MS DOS before that.  I am not an expert by any means but over the years I have learned my way around the system pretty well.  A lot has been learned from books but also help articles, magazines and the internet.  Getting used to the Mac is mostly just learning where things are and how to move around in the system.  The two systems are very similar but do things different.  I have found a lot of help from some Youtube videos .  The "Dummies" books can help a lot.
I don't think there are any books out there that can help with understanding Medicare or medical insurance.

Our weather forecast was pretty accurate this time; probably we got around 18". Haven't heard any plows yet, but I expect they'll be along shortly. Our town is the largest in the state in terms of area but still much is occupied by rural roads and the population is small by most standards - getting road crews out and working while having enough cash to pay them is, I'm sure, a challenge.

Has anyone gotten the vaccine? I have not and am disinclined to, but will wait awhile. I hear you have to schedule through the CDC which is unusual.

Bigskygal - It is warmer in your state than here in IL.  This morning we have 11 deg with a possible high of 30 deg F.

85 this morning.  Well,  There will be six more weeks of winter Punxsutawney Phil predicted as he emerged from his burrow on a snowy Tuesday morning to perform his Groundhog Day duties.  The rodent saw his shadow so he says winter will last longer.  Then again what does an oversized rat know ?
Here we are looking at a daytime high of 70° so it doesn't look much like winter but most of you are seeing some really wintery weather so maybe Phil is right.

Wally - Love your comment about Phil - What does an oversized rat know?  Its cold outside here and more snow is predicted for this weekend which is just a repeat of last weekend.  I'm ready for Spring soon.

101 this cloudy morning.

50° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 53°/26°. It is already up to 50° with a very light rain. You are right Grammabear, our weather has been very mild this Winter...hope I didn't just jinx us...

Tamagno, I am also disinclined to get the vaccine. I want to talk to the pharmacist here in town. I can wait until more is known about any side effects.

There is no wintery weather here, never is. In fact day time 70 deg F would be considered wintery.

All I know is that woodchucks are an awful mess to have around and have no special insight into the weather or much else, for that matter. They have one good use, however, for the gastronomically adventurous:

Up here, it's snowy and cold and appears likely to stay that way awhile.

It is also cold here with another winter storm on its way shortly.  The temperatures after the winter storm are expected to drop below zero making it feel a lot colder than at present.

Tamagno - Your link for sharing the groundhog recipe is unique.  My father-in-law would often take his firearm with him as he traveled in his woods and sometimes he would bring home a fat squirrel (which tasted like chicken).  These days it isn't so easy to go hunting with real estate being developed all over.  The Recipe Keeper looks very interesting also.  Where can I find this app?

Our trees are all frosty and beautiful this morning.  They will change when the sun comes up, but for now they are gorgeous.

90 this morning. Well, 70s is where we are right now and through the weekend then in the mid 60s.  February is usually a good month for rain here but right now it doesn't look too good.
Tamagno, I agree that the woodchuck is not really a good predictor of weather but it is kind of a fun thing although I don't think he has a very good record.  I think I will have to pass on the recipe though.
Barbra, I think that there may be nothing wrong with your laptop installing the Apple OS update.  When I first got this laptop it had Mojave on it and notified me that the new OS Big Sur was available and I downloaded it and installed it and it didn't seem to take too long at all.  Yesterday I got a notice that an update from the 11.1 version I had had an update to 11.2 available and I normally install updates when they are offered as they usually include security updates.  This one took a looooonnnnnnngggg time to install.  The download was not long but then it said "preparing update" and showed a status bar and 15 min. left.  The status bar doesn't move and I just set it to the side and let it go.  After about 15 min. it changed to 10 min. left and after another 15 min. it changed to 5 min. left and finally after about another 15 min. it finished up.  I think it took over an hour from start to finish but it finally did and all seems well now.  I don't know why it took so long but maybe it is because these laptops are not as fast as the newer ones.  I like Big Sur and think it is worth upgrading tobut it seems to take patience to get it.  The upgrade from 11.1 to 11.2 doesn't have much in the way of feature changes but it has a very long list of security fixes and that may be one reason it took so long.

100 this cloudy morning.

Yesterday's high was 50°, today's forecast is 37°/27° but it is already 40° so that is off.

It went hours trying to upgrade Wally, then it finally said "Upgrade failed" and stopped trying. I haven't tried it in a while, I'll look at it again soon.
