82 this morning.  A bit cooler and very windy today but still in the warm zone.
When I was in rehab for my broken hip I did pretty well with my bg by just not eating anything that was "carby" and stuck to the things like meat, eggs etc.  After a few days I got a visit from the nutritionist and I thought "now the fight begins" but I was surprised that when I told her that I controlled my bg with my diet she agreed and actually had them increase the protein and avoid the carbs.  I was quite surprised.

88 this sunny morning.

49° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 61°/32°.

Glad you nutritionist appointment went well Tamagno. I've tried that yogurt it is good. I have to go to the larger grocery store in town to get it though and I haven't been there in sometime.

Feeling much better so far today.  Slept like a rock last night so that helped. I just drank ginger tea and for lunch and dinner yesterday I made a very plain jook. My first DH's mom used to make it whenever any one was sick. It is also called congee and can have all sorts of additions. I made mine very simply with a cup of chicken broth about 1/2 cup rice, 2 slices of ginger, a splash of soy sauce, a splash of fish sauce and a pinch of red boat salt. You boil it until the rice is mush. It is very soothing to the stomach. I may make another batch today. I feel good, but I'm going to take it easy again today.

The above dish sounds like comfort food and I would like to try it.  Can you tell me where I might buy fish sauce?  Never saw it in our store yet.

Quote from: Tamagno on April 21, 2021, 07:03:46 AMActually, my phone visit with the nutritionist went surprisingly well with none of the usual demands to eat more fruit, grains and vegetables. In the end, besides recommending a triple-fat Icelandic yogurt (Siggy's I think) she was basically complementary of my diet accommodations. Now, that's surprising.

I have actually counselled 2 doctors. Well, one was a Homeopath and the other a physiotherapist. Both women had approached me for weight loss. I just gave them a refresher on glucose metabolism and fat storage. They were like "Gosh, we know that". Actually, they know what is to be known but for some strange reason, they forget things when it comes to their patients. It's like, I once saw a farmer on TV admit that he grows his own vegetables, in a pesticide free 1/2 acre of his farmland. But he had no qualms in selling the lethal stuff to his customers who paid good money for his produce.

??? This morning (CGM's busted again and I'm too lazy for a finger stick just now).

BigSkyGal, congee is the name I know that by. For those wanting to try it, you could get close to fish sauce and the salt BigSkyGal mentions by adding a couple of anchovies. You won't actually taste them, but your rice will be especially rich tasting.

It's about 23 here this morning. I'm hoping that things already blooming don't turn brown, but there's nothing to be done about it.

I'm in another of those moods in which all I want is to get out of here and go on a road trip alone. Along the way I'd like to eat junky fast food and drink beer. None of that is going to happen of course, but the idea of doing that one last time sure is appealing.

104 this morning.

I have a real early morning appointment with the audiologist to pick up a 'accessory' for my hearing aid that was broken.  I ordered a new one two months ago and it finally came in and now all of a sudden the audiology office wants me to pick it up 'pronto'.  It is a device that streams sound from the TV straight to my hearing aid so I don't have to have the volume on the TV at a deafining level.

Tamagno - your road trip sounds interesting.  What would be your destination?

90 this morning.  There is a storm system heading towards the West Coast and they may get some rain over the weekend and next week for some areas.  Of course we will just get a bit lower temps and wind.
Tamagno, your trip sounds enjoyable but like you I don't see it happening but fun to think about.  Maybe a trip down the street for a burger !  That is more likely.

117 this cloudy morning.

58° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 52°/30° with a 50% chance of rain.

Grammabear, you may find the fish sauce in the Oriental food section of your grocery and surely on Amazon.

Yes, Tamagno, jook is also known as congee, and absolutely a couple of sardines will achieve the same result as fish sauce and the red boat salt (I love that salt!). I made a very plain version as I didn't want to upset my stomach, but meat, fish and/or a variety of veggies can well be added to make it a true meal instead of a "medicine". Lots of recipes available on the internet.

129 again today.

I guess what Tamagno means is - Enjoy the journey, forget the destination. Difficult, with the new 'normal'.

99 this morning.

Likely I'd head down home to West Virginia and then south to just about anyplace that's not a city. It'd be fun to sample some of the regional foods if any are left to be had.

First, though, I expect I'd better start by seeing if I can make it to the town dump and a grocery store this morning.

By the way, I often slip some anchovies or red boat salt into sauces I make - my wife would never try them on her own, but always likes the flavor when I do it.

95 this morning.

I guess my cuisine is pretty boring because I haven't had exposure to much of anything besides meat, potatoes and vegetables.  We used to try different ethnic food restaurants but Covid pretty much put a stop to that.

If I was going on a road trip, I think I would head West as I've never been in that direction.  I would like to see a Palm tree as I don't see them in our location either.  A mountain would be awesome too.

skb - If Covid wasn't a problem, where would you go for sightseeing?  Do people in India just take off for a destination to see something 'different'?

107 this morning.  There is a storm system coming through this weekend and some areas are expecting rain which is badly needed but here it is just going to be cooler and windy.  Next week after it passes we will be heading to the 90s.
Grammabear, I have palm trees and mountains in view looking out my window. I have lived in Southern California all my life and have always had mountains in view and it seems that wherever I have been in the Southland there are palm trees.  I never really thought of it before.

123 this cloudy morning. Ran out of the strips for the meter I like best, this one tends to read higher...

52° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 55°/30°.

Where I live, I am surrounded by mountains, no palm trees though! I have been all over the world but these days hardly feel safe enough to go to the grocery store. If I were to take a road trip, I would head to CA and visit my kids and grands but that isn't going to happen any time soon.

As far as food goes, my first DH was Chinese and basically his mom taught me a lot about that cuisine. My second DH was Hungarian, totally different cuisine profile. I learned a lot through cookbooks and his favorite foods. I am pretty much open to try anything within reason.

Sure, especially the young. It all depends on how deep your pockets are. Indians are big travelers and if you the see the worldwide tourist data, you would find us somewhere on the higher side. Can't compete with the Chinese though. Economy and finance are the factors otherwise we do have the wanderlust. Personally, I'd prefer a forest anyday.

69 this morning.

Well, as I was taught in Boy Scouts, "anything's edible once." I'm an adventurous eater, but am aware of some foods I'd never touch. BigSkyGal, that's quite a shift from Chinese to Hungarian cuisine! What I really like about Chinese food is that textures are considered as well as flavor.

The mice are back in force at my place. My wife started noticing them in the kitchen and decided to put traps out (unfortunately, last night all in front of the stove and sink). So, now my morning chores include collecting the traps and disposing of dead mice. Oh joy. Last night we got three out of seven traps set which is good, but I know that means there are lots more. I'd get a cat, but they're too much work - I think I'll just get a pet boa constrictor...
