Quote from: Sweety on May 10, 2021, 04:08:13 AMI had some fried banana chips yesterday evening. I never knew that it would increase my reading so much.

If you got them from the market then they probably had added sugar. Just a bit, but certainly added.

74 this morning.

Interestingly, with G6 I can now eat many fruits,  but not bananas. Of course,  I only have small amounts of fruit at any given time. Potatoes and rice are still a big no-no.

Grammabear, I hope that cold out your way doesn't come here.  Its been cold and rainy for days now,  although not cold enough for another freeze.  Looks like we'll be having some sun today but i haven't checked the forecast for highs.

102 this cold, crisp sunny morning.

We are forecast for possible freeze tonight and tomorrow night.  We cover our newly planted flowers each night or bring hanging baskets of flowers into the house.

As for fruit, I can manage berries, but no more than 1/2 cup full.  I can get by with bananas that are a smidgen past pure green.  I love bananas, but they don't usually love me.  Shanny once told me that 'YMMV' (your mileage may vary) in reference to fruits and many other foods.  It seems that what she said is pretty much true.

Sweety - This is just a quick account of how things turned out for me when my children were younger.  They loved bananas and sometimes when I would buy them, they would still have a tinge of green.  We bought a food dehydrator and made our own banana chips.  I never had to add sugar because once a banana chip is dehydrated, the natural sugar becomes quite pronounced.  Dehydrating fruit used to be very popular here in the U.S., but I don't know if it is popular in India.  We did our dehydrating long before I was diagnosed with diabetes.  My children still love bananas, but as yet neither of them are diagnosed with diabetes.

97 this morning.  Not near cold here, 90° yesterday and should be 92° today.
I know some people are able to do OK with berries but I tried and It doesn't work for me but everyone is different.  I once attended a session with a "diabetes educator" because my doctor then wanted me to.  One of the things she suggested was that a good breakfast for a diabetic was oatmeal with non-fat milk and a banana.  I tried that and did something that was never suggested and tested my bg after and it was 300 and that was when I started to question all of the things I had been told. Another thing she suggested was a good lunch was whole wheat bread, peanut butter and low sugar jelly. The thinking I guess is that whole wheat doesn't affect bg, wrong, and peanut butter is good because it is nuts, wrong, and jelly is OK if it is low sugar.  None of that is correct but it is what was being taught to diabetics.  When I told my doctor what my bg was after eating the suggested breakfast all I got was a shrug of his shoulders.

102 this mostly clear morning.

59° was the high yesterday, today's forecast is 63°/28° another overnight freeze...

So true Wally, I got much the same advice from the "diabetes educator" I was sent to. I think that is how we all ended up on the other diabetes forum. We did our own research, found like minded people and got our diabetes under control. The only way to know what foods work for us is to test, test, test.

I think most of us have encountered at least one of these diabetes educators. On the other side of the equation though, are the many diabetics who dutifully take their "sugar pill" and then eat exactly as they did prior to DX.

It never ceases to amaze me what a morass of misinformation surrounds this disease and why it is that there's so little consensus regarding proper treatment.

Which also makes me wonder to what extent the same is true of other diseases and what misguided therapies are in place.  Caveat emptor holds true with illness as with most things,  I suppose.

121 this sunny, crisp morning.

My 'diabetes educator' story came from the GP himself who diagnosed me as Type 2 just because I was overweight.  He told me I could eat anything I wanted as long as I took my insulin.  When it became evident that 'my numbers' were not going down, he accused me of not taking my medicine.  I then asked for a referral to an Endocrinologist which he refused.  I made an appointment with the Endo anyway.  The Endo was a very observant individual.  Among other things he asked me was "what do you have for breakfast"?  The rest is history and I'm glad I ignored the GPs advice and checked out the Endocrinologist's advice instead.

96 this morning.  Weather today is, well, same as yesterday.
We expect doctors to be the best source for information and guidance when we have a health problem and I think most of the time that is true but why there is so much bad information from so many doctors regarding diabetes is a mystery.  It seems like the approach by most doctors is to prescribe a medication and leave it at that.

101 this partly cloudy morning.

Yesterday's high was 63°, today's forecast is 70°/34°.

I've been seeing this ad on TV for a bulk buying service called Boxed.com so last night I took a look at it and placed an order. They carry several things I normally buy and things I could buy. Prices weren't too bad so will see how delivery goes. I asked a couple questions and they were quickly answered this morning so that seems like a good thing. Anything that keeps me out of the grocery as much as possible is a good thing.

95 this morning.

The GP who first diagnosed me as a type 2 diabetic looked at my height and weight and promptly assigned me a high BMI and said I was obese.  What he failed to notice was that I was, at the time, a serious amateur body builder and actually had under 10% body fat.   The metformin he gave me didn't work and it took a trip to the ER with DKA to get things straightened out. Too bad there's no blood test for being a blind and dull-witted robot that could be administered to some of these guys.

BigSkyGal you remind me that I need to go to the grocery today. I'm in the mood for something Asian - maybe Korean bulgogi made with beef or shrimp done in either a Chinese or Thai style - depends on what I find at the grocery.

127 this morning.

I think many of us get poor advice about diabetes from the doctor because that is what 'they' learned when they went to medical school.  Ask them about what they learned of diabetes in medical school and pretty much all of them give you the same answer.  Doctors are schooled to prescribe a medicine because it generates income. Rarely would any of them give advice to follow a way of eating such as Shottle Bop follows because there is no income in recommending that way of eating.  I wonder how Shottle Bop learned about his way of eating?

We might get up to 70 deg today and that is fine with me.  I'm weary of this cold, damp weather and besides I have to mow lawn today.

98 this morning.  We are going to "cool down" to 81° over the weekend and then back to the 90s.  Not bad for May as we are not in the 100s yet.
ShottleBop was also in the other forum many of us were in prior to this one.  He is a good example of "eat to your meter" and his diet was more restrictive at first and he found out he could handle more carbs and still maintain good bg control.  He is a good example of "we are all different" and that we have to follow what is best for us.  I can't handle as many carbs as he can but I probably can handle more than some.

Well, my Boxed order shipped today via Fed Ex tracking says delivery Saturday. They use Fed Ex and UPS which makes me happy as USPS is sometimes undependable.
