Grammabear, insofar as I wasn't raised in the northeast its always been my habit to greet others whether I know them or not.  This practice is unheard of, however, in this region as it remains a bastion of narcissistic arrogance equaled only by Parisians, so my greetings are usually met with confusion and suspicion. Its sad to hear that's creeping into the midwest as well.

When I was growing up, a trip to town meant an opportunity to see someone you might know.  My Mother and Grandmother used to turn a trip to the grocery story into a chance to "catch up on local events" by visiting with someone they knew in that store.  Nowadays, I never see anyone I know and everyone is in a big hurry to get out of the store and onto their next errand.  A lot of things have changed in my lifetime.

85 this morning.  Officially Summer doesn't start until next Sunday in the Northern Hemi but with temps now over 100° here I would consider it has already started.  Typical foe June though.
It seems like people closer to my age are more prone to greet you when passing.  I like it and always respond in kind but some people may look at it as an intrusion.  Times and people change.

112 this sunny morning.

82° was the high yesterday, small thunderstorm passed through last night. Today's forecast is 91°/52°. Too hot for me, only thing I am going to do today is take the garbage up to the street and stay in my closed up house to ride the heat out. Errands will have to wait until tomorrow.

I haven't been to the US, but in Europe, it is common to smile at people and nod a 'Hello'. Not in these parts of the world, the obvious reason being too many people. It would also be grossly misunderstood and aspersions cast on the mental well-being of the greeter. Now, with masks on it is impractical. The world has changed.

I have travelled the world quite a bit and I found things to be different everywhere. My travels were many years ago so no Covid related experiences. In Taiwan, I found people to be reserved and on the withdrawn side. I was travelling alone as a single woman at the time yet felt safe to go out to the street markets at night. Got some side eyed glances but felt safe.

I travelled in India for a month with a group and found the people friendly yet reserved. I travelled extensively in Europe with late DH, I found the French to be on the "snooty" side especially if you didn't speak perfect French. I had a pass in Hungary as DH was Hungarian and we were met with open arms. Most of Europe was open and friendly 20+ years ago. I have no idea what things are like now and probably never will. But my experience is that people are different area to area, maybe more so now due to Covid.

My fasting reading is 95 today.

I have never travelled outside of India so I don't know about the customs. But in small viallges it is custom to greet everyone throughout the day not just in the morning. In cities people stay away from the others.

Yesterday there was a huge explosion at a chemical plant about 30 miles from where I live.  We could see the black plume from the fire from our front porch.  As far as is known, there were no fatalities or major injuries to human life.  The fire is likely to burn for days.  It is being monitored but the firemen are not putting water on the fire as there is a river about 500 yards from the plant.  There are now 500 people out of a job.  Very sad.

I'm late posting on account of pure sloth; I'd slept in my favorite chair and just didn't want the day to start. On the other hand, by the time I got to making breakfast it was late enough that I made my lunch smoothie at the same time so at least that's done.

Grammabear, that's really awful about the plant explosion. I surely hope the people who were employed there can find other work quickly.

I just don't think humans were built to live in big cities; they have the habit of breeding many of our worst qualities that wouldn't be tolerated in small towns or villages. When I first moved here it was pretty much a farming community and has since grown into a bedroom community of New York City. The cultural changes accompanying that evolution are palpable and certainly not for the better.

I suppose that view might be interpreted as merely the ravings of an old coot waxing nostalgic over how much better things were in the old days, but I really don't think so...

96 this morning.  Getting hotter with a high of today predicted at 112° and 115° tomorrow.  The entire West Coast is under a heat wave this week but it seems kind of normal for here.
Grammabear, I saw videos of the explosion on the news.  It looks like quite a major disaster.  I didn't realize it was so close to you.
I do like the Macbook I bought and because it is so much smaller and lighter than my Lenovo Windows laptop I would like to take it with me if I travel.  The only drawback is that the battery is getting older and right now is at 60% of new so it doesn't hold a charge as long as when new.  I looked into replacing the battery and Ifixit has the battery and tools to make the replacement but it looks rather daunting.  Following the guide it reminds me of the old "Operation" game where a small slip set off a buzzer and here a small slip can destroy the laptop.  Even though the battery is lower in capacity than new it still lasts about 4 hours when charged and of course works fine when plugged in.  I'm still debating if I want to jump in and try to change it, kind of a challenge, so I am going to kick it around a bit.  Not planning to travel anytime soon.

113 this sunny morning.

82° according to one of my outside thermometers was the high yesterday, another one registered 100°, so I'm guessing the real # was something around 90°. Today's forecast is for cooler weather, 82°/52°.

I couldn't even make myself take the garbage up to the road yesterday, today I have to go out to run errands. I don't know why I am so afraid of going out...

Grammabear, that must be a frightening experience to have so close to home. Hopefully the people that have lost their jobs can find other employment quickly.

I quite agree with you. The Industrial Revolution has changed a lot of things, mostly in the way of life. The last 300 years of human history has run over the history of millions of years and has caused many problems in its wake.

Wally, I can sympathize with looking daunting - like you I'd like to do it myself, but would be nervous about it. Are there specialized tools involved?

SKB, a propos your remark I'm reminded of Industrial Revolution spin offs like electric lights in private homes using no insulation on wires for the ruling class, and handy water pumps in the streets of tenements spreading disease for the lower class. Much to dislike about that era but also much to like. We're still arguing over the influence of technology...

Because our climate can be bitter cold during the winter season, my husband carries all our plants like Christmas cactus, amaryllis and lilies to the basement.  Our Christmas cactus usually bloom proficiently 'after' Christmas and the Amaryllis are just blooming outside now.  We actually don't do much for them during the winter, except to water them once a month or so.  We have to water by hand several times a week now during the season where we are supposed to get rain, but do not.  Weatherman said we are almost 7 inches below normal rainfall for our area.

89 this morning.  Well, all I can say is that it's hot here and that's no surprise.  We got to 110° yesterday and it's supposed to get tp 115° today.  I'm really glad that the power system was upgraded a few years ago and brown outs and blackouts are rare.  It is really necessary to have A/C here this time of the year.
Yeah Tamagno, there are special tools needed and since the battery is underneath everything a lot of small ribbon cables need to be removed and the battery is glued in so the kit comes with solvent and it looks like it would be kind of tricky to remove it.  There are a lot of pitfalls where you could trash the laptop but it still looks like something I might take on just to see if I can.  However the battery it has now will last about 4 hours on a full charge so it is not a major problem.
