I've been dealing with this disease for about 6 years now. I am convinced I have it because my Dr. prescribed a statin; shortly thereafter I was diagnosed. I tracked my blood sugar regularly through my employment and it was always normal - till the statin. SO, I take one 500 Metformin in the morning. It is hard to balance the different types of "diets". I tried keto; my blood sugar dropped. Eating meat, fat, etc. my cholesterol went up. Hard to maintain. Recently, my BS has risen drastically, I took a fall and in the long run, lost my top teeth. I"m still in transition and don't eat much meat anymore and found myself relying on lots of soft food which hasn't been kind to me. I am 71, not overweight, I know I need to exercise more; I always have good intentions. I am back on keto as of this morning to get my BS down. My morning test was 167 which is much higher than normal. So ... hello all!

Hello vikjohn and  ~wcm~

Drug induced illnesses are way too common and really not understood as there is not enough research out there. So, it could be that your 'hunch' about the statins causing your diabetes may be right.

Cholesterol is again a dicey subject and we know what we know but that is not quite a lot. In older age higher levels of serum cholesterol are thought to be more beneficial than harmful. Secondly, when you are on a ketogenic way of eating, you turn the body's metabolic switch from using Carbs to Fats for energy. In that state the body starts to lose its fats stores and that is why people lose weight on a keto diet. Because of the high rate of fatty acids entering the blood stream from stored fats, the cholesterol levels go up for a time. This time could be anywhere between 6 months to a year or even more in some cases. In my own case, I have found my cholesterol level higher when I smoke, so that is another factor that affects the lipid levels. Like that, there are many factors that could be responsible and we really know way too little, given the complexity of the human body.

When you say your BS levels have risen 'drastically' what are the numbers that we are looking at. Without the exact numbers it is hard to say if that is a cause for concern or not, though with 6 years of experience you definitely would know the ropes.

Once again. welcome to the forum. Do post a lot, all our members would love to make your acquaintance and share their stories and wisdom.

Welcome vikjohn! So glad you joined us!

As skb said it is common for drugs to induce unrelated illnesses, but it is a slippery slope of blame.

From my own experience going keto/low/carb/hf really made a difference in all my readings and I got into the normal range by strictly following those dietary regimens within 6 months.

Looking forward to hearing more from you! Again Welcome!
