I'm a big movie buff. We watch a movie practically every night. Have a decent home theatre & a collection of ~ 1000 movies. Download speeds being pathetic we cannot bank on Netflix or iTunes yet.

Last night we saw The Revenant. Though the movie was shot very well & the locales were fantastic the movie itself was very disturbing & depressing.

So, what kind of movies do you like to watch, and what would be your "must watch" recommendations ?

SKB....Since my wife and I are not retired we do enjoy watching movies.  We have a nice set up with a big screen and we can download movies off of Amazon and Netflix if we want to.

We actually love going to the movies, but the quality of movies that are worth the money has been failing for years.  Hollywood has few talented actors left and no screen writers that have an original thought.  So we seldom find a movie to go out to see!

The movie you just saw was a remake of an older movie called "Man in the Wilderness"!  It was not a great movie either....but I never go and see remakes....but I understand that is about all they have to do, with no original thoughts going on in Hollywood!

I love historical movies especially WWII movies.   Pearl Harbor, Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, and then The Patriot, Dancing with Wolves, etc. etc.

I guess it was the Oscar hype that got people interested in this one. I've seen all of the ones that you mentioned. In fact the latest war blockbuster, Fury is also a good one.

Really not much of a movie watcher here.  My late DH was a huge fan of old movies.  He watched them every night until his eyesight was gone.  He loved The Sound of Music  and we even visited the  sites of the movie in Europe.  I loved The Third Man.  The more recent movie I'd like to see is The War Horse. I have Amazon Prime, but I just don't look at the movies much.

If your BH was a movie buff, Barb, mine is exactly the opposite. I didn't know him at the time, but I've been told on good authority that he got up & walked out of one of the classic movies of all time - Gone With the Wind! And the kids are still miffed at us because when they took us to see one of the Rambo movies, he laughed the whole time.

I think the last movie we saw in a theater was 'Where the Wild Things Are' in 2009 . . . we had given our grandson the book, so when he came to visit us, we took in the movie as well.

Once in a great while I watch something online.

Not much action in this department.

Timewsie if you like war movies, you will like Act of Valor. Saw it recently. Loved it.
Or even Zero Dark Thirty.

Thanks....SKB and starsign....I have seen Fury and Act of Valor, and Zero Dark Thirty.....I think I have seen most old and new war movies, it is just something I really enjoy....and so does my wife!  How cool is that!?

I really liked Fury as few movies correctly presented what it was like to do battle in a WWII era Tank!  This movie captured it better then any other I have seen.  Although I hate that actor!  He uses his stardom to lecture the masses on politics....YECH!

Act of Valor and Zero Dark Thirty were both very good movies.....

Of course Patton is great, the Eagles Nest, Sands of Iwo Jima, Pearl Harbor, The Great Escape,

Last year I think Sniper was one of the better movies and the fact it is based on a real American hero makes it even better.  Although the ending was tragic ...

Most of the old classics are still my favorites, my wife is especially in love with the old Submarine movies....Torpedo Run, Run Silent, Run Deep, etc. ...my mind runs blank right now...but you all know the ones I am thinking of....

Thanks to all

I keep wondering if I'm getting old or if there are just not many good movies. I'm looking forward to Captain America: Civil War. I liked Deadpool and Zootopia. I am tempted to rent the Revenant but if it's disturbing maybe I'll skip it. I do know that as I get older I like movies that make me laugh, I have enough anxiety without having a movie add to it LOL.

Good comedies are always welcome. We enjoy a good laugh every now & then. One movie that I recollect that we enjoyed was Fading Gigolo by Woody Allen.

My son got me an Amazon Firestick for Christmas, and I have been enjoying using it ever since.  So much so that I cancelled by AT&T UVerse account.  I have been watching mostly TV shows available through Amazon Prime, Netflix and Acorn.  One of my favorites is a British police drama called Vera.  I watched all six seasons and might re-watch at some point again, it was that good.  I enjoy a lot of British shows, like Foyle's War, Inspector Morse, Prime Suspect.  I also liked the series Justified, Fargo, Longmire, and have even been re-watching old seasons of The Amazing Race.

As to movies - like many others, I haven't really enjoyed many of the more recent movies.  I do love to watch old movies sometimes, like Laura, or The Thin Man, or any Bogart-Bacall movie.  Love Spencer Tracy/Katherine Hepburn too.  I have many happy memories of watching these old movies with my mother and my grandmother.

Some British serials like Yes Minister are my all time favourites. Long ago, I was a big fan of the American serial Benson.

I remember the show Benson, although I haven't thought about that in years!  Oh, I also watched the Brit version of House of Cards and thought it was excellent.

Another older British comedy = Are You Being Served?  Still makes me laugh.

My fav british tv show was "Mind your Language". Grew up laughing at the jokes. And "3 is Company" from the States.

Saw the Tom Hanks starrer Bridge of Spies last night. I loved the film & the story (which is based on true events). The story is set at the end of WWII & Steven Spielberg has done an excellent job in recreating that era.
