13,980 steps yesterday.

Sweety, like Wally, I try to walk a certain number of steps each hour, at least 500 and often more during the day. At night as I am watching TV I get up and walk around the house every time the commercials come on. Almost all of my walking is done inside as I have balance issues on uneven ground.

Ran errands today and for some reason, I couldn't find a few things at the grocery store. Did many trips back and forth...came home exhausted. Hope the step count reflects all the extra running around.

Barbara - I have experience the same thing when I shop at the grocery store - can't find a few things.  It is my opinion that the store deliberately rearranges products so that you have to back track to find where they are NOW thereby looking at other products and maybe you will buy extras of something.  Just my opinion, don't know how true it is.

It is absolutely true !  Stores really do rearrange the products to get you to get you to cover more territory in the hopes that you will see something you just can't pass up.  It is a tactic that has been used for years.

Went up to town today to get a hair cut...my pixie cut was down to the middle of my back!! LOL, guess it was time. Had to wait for appointment tent so walked all around Ross and then after went to Target and tried to find some new clothes...sheesh, the current styles are not to my taste at all! So I came home with groceries instead.

I am still dealing with the same issues and my doctor thinks it is just because I am getting older.  Maybe it is but it does seem like a convenient way for a doctor to dismiss something.  Anyway I have changed my goals and while I still log steps I am paying more attention to how many min. I walk in a day total and trying to get at least 250 steps each hour for the 12 hours from 6 AM to 5 PM.  I started keeping track of min. walked because I took on a challenge from AARP to walk at least 30 min. a day every day for May and June.  I have an app on my iPhone that keeps track of min. walked as well as steps so that makes it easy.  My Fitbit keeps track of each hour that I do at least 250 steps and buzzes at 10 min before the hour if I need more steps to meet the 250. Posting just steps was getting kind of depressing because it just pointed out to me that I was not able to do what I wanted to do and had been doing in the past.  This feels a bit better.
My post will have total steps, min. walked and how many hours I was able to make a 250 step min.  for yesterday :
6129 steps, 0.59 min. and 12/12
These are the stats I am keeping track of.

That sounds like a great plan Wally. Sorry you weren't able to get better info from your doc.

Wally and Bigskygal - I am in the process of getting 'diabetic' shoes through Medicare.  You would think that is a simple process, but quite the contrary.  Anyway, I finally have the shoes with the special insoles in the house and I'm wearing them several hours each day per instructions of the shop where I had to be correctly fitted.  What I'm wondering is do either of you have special shoes to support your feet while you are accumulating all the steps you do?  Before the new shoes, I usually just put on a pair that was easy to slip on, maybe not so good for walking but easy to get on.

6767 steps, 53 min. and 12/12 hours yesterday.  It was windy so I pretty much stayed inside.
Grammabear, I don't have any special shoes.  I am lucky in that I don't seem to have any problems with my feet except for my nails.  I have Psoriasis and that affects my nails also so it is a challenge to keep them trimmed properly but the shoes don't have anything to do with that.  I have worn a variety of training/walking shoes and SKB mentioned a while back that he preferred Sketchers and I tried them and like them a lot so that is what I have now.  The proper size and fit seem to be the most important.

I wear Bob's by Sketchers slippers. They have memory foam insoles and firm thick rubber soles. They have lots of support. As Wally said getting the proper size is very important. I have a little numbness in my feet, but don't know if it is from diabetes or the bulging disc and other spine issues in my low back.

In our town we used to have a well known cardiologist.  He maintained the Sketchers were the only shoes he ever really liked.  He was also a runner and did competitive running well into his 80s.  I have never heard of Sketchers before reading about this doctor in a newspaper article.  I should look up that brand and see where they are sold.  Thank you both for your input and skb for recommending this brand.
