It's easy to get complacent

Rhiannon

As I've mentioned before, I recently moved in with my elderly mother, disabled adult sister and older sister - a household of ladies!  Before that, it had been myself and my son for 18 years, the last 2+ years being post-diagnosis for diabetes.  With the help of this forum and an earlier one, I'd been eating LCHF and doing fairly well controlling my BG numbers.  I know the drill; I know what I can and what I cannot eat.  My son was pretty self-sufficient, so I would make my LCHF foods and he would eat some, and otherwise make what he wanted to eat, and it all worked out pretty well.

But now that I'm living in a larger family situation, I am slipping and need to catch myself now.  My sister made some talapia for dinner last night - from a box of frozen, lightly breaded talapia.  I made a side salad and so I had a piece of fish and my salad for dinner (three leaves of leafy  lettuce, 3 strips of crumbled bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, and some chopped cucumber).  An hour after dinner, I took a reading and it was 129!  I am pretty sure it was the breading on the fish.

I have to stop eating what everyone else is eating at dinner and simply make my own meal every time.  By the time I get home from my commute, I'm tired so I don't feel like preparing much.

I need to be more organized, and do a lot of the prep work the night before so that when I get home, I can put together my own separate dinner with ease.  I was very unhappy with that reading and I don't want to see it again.  Stopping at the store on my way home today to pick up more HWC, a bit of broccoli, and plan to make creamy bacon/broccoli soup for my dinner tonight.

I understand some of what you might be feeling Rhiannon.  My husband is not diabetic and is slim, not overweight.  He is easy to cook for, but he still has to have his potatoes, rice, noodles, ice cream etc.  I catch myself every once in a while caving in and having some of what he is having - and then kicking myself later on.

It sure is easy. Reading from member experience I can say one thing is common, it's always when other people are around. In my few months here, I've slipped a few times but always when I was in company. At such times we tend to say What the hell. But I must add that the forum helps to bring me back to my senses immediately. That's why I like to come here everyday.

Rocky, we have word censoring in place & do not permit profanity. Please be careful.

I do agree that we do slip sometimes under pressure from others. The pressure may be actual or perceived but it is there. However, it is up to us to stand firm. Having said that, I must admit, I also do slip in the same situations, but most of the times it is religious functions or festivals that make me do that.

That is also my problem. But living in a nuclear family I manage the food completely on my own.
However, when I visit my viallage, my granny is the one who is forceful about roti and rice. I have a tough time with her.

But I used the expression wth, with he11. I didn't know that is not permitted.

Thanks for that information. I'll see that "he11" is removed from the censored words. I think this word is used in many common scenarios.

Edit : Done. As you can see now I can type the word hell.

Sure, it is easy to get complacent about your food intake. And it is also true that mostly this happens when you are around other people. AJ has some weaknesses for certain foods but he is easily able to resist them when alone or at home. When with friends or relatives it is difficult for him to control his urges. Then he will  ;) at me.
