I think this is well known even without knowing that specific link. I've come across so many heart patients who are diabetic. That is the reason I work hard to keep this monster at bay.

Actually I think that this is not well known by many people who are diabetic.  When I was first diagnosed 24 years ago information was not as easy to find as it is today and we relied on our doctor for our health info.  It was not until I finally got fed up with my doctor and started doing research that I was aware of a lot of the information that existed.  The fact that the information is now much easier to access now I see as a very positive thing and the younger people today are aware of how to find out more about their condition is a real benefit.

My mom was diagnosed with diabetes after having had heart disease for 20-some years, and in our subsequent research on the subject, we found that her arthritis was prob'ly a factor in the equation also. 

I've had some arthritis for several years, and now I have diabetes, but I asked my doc awhile back if I were ever going to develop heart disease, I'd surely have done it by now - 72 years of age - and he agreed with that.

Yup. My father was an uncontrolled T2 Diabetic with numbers in the 400s when he was diagnosed. He would have taken care, if he knew how. Those were the days without meters & only the urine strips were the way to check. He suffered a stroke at age 63 and while in hospital got a massive heart attack plus multiple organ failure until his body just gave up.

Mom had her first heart attack at the age of 42. She had bypass surgery at the age of 60. The diabetes came about ten years later (as you say, those were the years of urine strips), and she died at age 74. So medical technology brought her several more years than she'd prob'ly have had otherwise. She managed her diabetes pretty well, but pain management became the ultimate enemy, as angina developed despite having had the bypass. She'd have agreed to a second bypass, but no doc would do it, so medical technology eventually failed her.

That is the sad truth.
