Grammabear, when we bought this joint (built in the '60s) we only found a badly defective septic system because my wife watched the inspector; the seller had to put in a whole new system. Given the cost of that, I'd say it's worth it to have it pumped every two years just to be safe.

Just about finished my current read ("The Diamond Age, or A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer" by Neal Stephenson - not at all what you might imagine from the title) and will have to start looking for something new. I've now read a number of Stephenson's novels that I've found amazing for the depth and extent of his knowledge as well as his remarkable creativity. Guess I'll start poking around the Amazon Kindle store later to see if I want another of his or stumble onto something different.

Part of the odd thing about Stephenson is that he's referred to as being "cyberpunk."  Can't say I ever imagined myself relating to such a description; heavens, I may have to redefine my entire personality structure...

98 this morning.  We were at 65° at 5:30 AM this morning heading to around 95° today.  It looks like we will see some cooling on the weekend and be in the mid 80's after that.

Hubby planted a few short rows of potatoes and loose leaf lettuce.  Now the 'rabbit patrol' begins because as soon as the seeds sprout the rabbits come to dine.  I'll have to put up a sign for them to "go away" or else put out moth balls at the edge of the garden.

105 this partly cloudy morning, 98 at bedtime last night.

A little cooler today, got up to 56°F (13.33°C) overnight prediction 30°F (-1.11°C). Looks like a warming trend is on the way for the end of the week.

Grammabear, I'm surprised more of your rabbits don't get eaten by predators in the spring. Of course, it only takes one to wreak havoc on a vegetable garden!

Slowly, slowly getting warmer here. The nights and morning are still pretty chilly, but I think even that's starting to improve. I'd better get out to the garage soon and sweep up all the winter detritus. A kind of messy chore but best done before it's too warm.

101 this morning.  We are looking at a bit of a cool down for the weekend.  That means from the mid 90's to the high 70's so not really cool, just a bit cooler.

John - We do have the occasional coyote around here to monitor the rabbit population, however they always seem to survive in spite of predators.  We also have a healthy population of owls as well.  I'm hoping the lettuce does well as I sure love homegrown lettuce more than the store bought stuff.

Looks like we're in for some rain the next few days but still warmish.

Grammabear, the last few years I grew vegetables I put them in a small garden patch just outside my sunroom. It was easier to keep an eye on them there and didn't seem to have so many critter troubles. Recently, the big offenders have been moles and voles that also get flower bulbs and are hard to get rid of.

Yesterday I got out and swept the garage. Boy, that chore really did me in! My plan for today is to just take it easy as I don't seem to have anything pressing in any event.

93 this morning.  Well, 95° yesterday and should be the same today.  Still looks like a bit cooler and windy over the weekend.
Up on the mountain growing vegies was a challenge.  Our growing season was short for one thing.  We were able to keep the rabits out with fencing and deer couldn't get into our fenced property but the gophers and moles were awful.  We had a greenhouse that we grew tomatoes really well but other things outside just weren't worth it.

We had a perfect Spring day yesterday with temperature about 70 degrees and a gentle north breeze.  We even had the windows open which felt SO good.  :)

Our flowering trees are beginning to bloom & the others to leaf out. Forsythia shrubs & the serviceberry & redbud trees are almost completely in bloom, and the dogwoods are getting started. I just hope it isn't too soon so they don't get zapped.

120 this morning.

Gophers and woodchucks are awful creatures at least as far as gardens and lawns are concerned. Only had one once who took up residence under one of my sheds and ripped up an amazing amount of plants until he was stopped.

A bit warmer here although still rainy and not warm enough for grilling. I expect we'll be well into May before I get the grill out and switch to summer cooking. Really looking forward to it!
