Back from the horrible flu

Hello everyone,
I just went through the really bad flu that is going around.  I came down with it on Jan. 5th and today is the first day that I actually feel fairly normal again.  I hope none of you get it!

The thing is, while I was sick, I really couldn't follow the LCHF way of eating.  For one thing, the thought of cream cheese, cheese, butter, bacon, eggs, etc., made me feel nauseous.  What I subsisted on mainly was tangerines, soda crackers, baked chicken, and chicken noodle soup.  I would wake up every hour and have a slice of tangerine.  I could eat a few crackers or a couple bites of chicken here and there.  And then I got this immense craving for watermelon and my sister picked up a small container of precut melon for me.  I ate two bites and it was like eating a sugar cube!  I had no idea what was happening with my BG numbers.

My question to you all is - what do you do when you are sick?

Another problem for now - I still don't really have any desire for my LCHF foods that I normally eat.  I don't have a problem with the low carb part.  It's the high fat that is still turning me off.  For example, for breakfast today I had some sliced roast beef and a strawberry.  For lunch, I had some leftover chicken teriyaki and half of a diet Dr. Pepper.  For dinner, I had my version of taco salad:  Refried beans, on a bed of lettuce, topped with shredded cheddar cheese, sliced tomatoes, olives, and guacamole.  I hope this is only temporary too.

I am also working on getting my BG numbers back down.  They did go up while I was sick, but are slowing coming back down.

Well, that's my boring news :)  I am glad to be back in the normal world again!

I've been unwell a couple of times in the recent past. Mostly it was throat based infection spreading into the lungs with a small bout of fever and a lot of lethargy. I think that whatever you went through was something more serious, because my bouts don't last over a week.

When I am sick I like to fast as much as I can. I bank mostly on water. I read about it somewhere here, tried it, and found it worked for me. So that's been my norm for the past few times.
My life is based on a true story.

Very glad to hear you're well again, MJ. I can't even remember when I've been sick - when either of us has. But we go out so rarely, so we don't get exposed.

But since I consume green tea by the quart, I think I would still stick with that, sick or not. I haven't even been using ice in it lately, because our tap water is nearly ice cold & my insulated carafe keeps it cold for plenty of time to drink it all. It's so important to stay hydrated during bouts of illness, since dehydration brings along its own yucky symptoms.

Both my husband and I came down with the "crud" as we called it on Jan 2 and last weekend is the first time we felt like we had returned to normal.  I like chicken broth when I feel nauseous and we gradually got back into eating things like cheese etc.

Grammabear - very glad you and your hubby are feeling better too.  I did keep a bottle of water by me while I was ill and did keep hydrated.  Thankfully, my energy level is coming back a little bit too, enough that I felt up to scrubbing the bathtub and sink this morning, and did a load of laundry.

Thanks everyone else who responded :)

Like Shanny, I am a hermit and don't go out often, thus I rarely get sick. My problem is allergies that sometimes make me loose my appetite. When that happens, I don't eat much and drink a lot of bone broth (https://www.barebonesbroth.com) plus lots of water.

The broth used to come frozen but now is shelf stable and only needs refrigeration once opened. I used to buy local but that was frozen and took up too much space in my freezer.

Do you have a favorite flavor of this company's products?  I went to the link you provided and there are quite a few to choose from.  I always like to ask someone who has used the product about 'their favorites' (if you don't mind).

My favorite is the Classic Chicken because you can add anything to it. I've already gone through two of them. I'm not crazy about Beef, but I did buy one to try this brand. I also got the Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon, but haven't tried it yet. Will let you know once I do.

Jimmy Moore advertised this brand. I had been buying a local brand but it was frozen while this new brand is shelf stable.

Thank you for your reply.  I think it is always handy to have something of quality that is also shelf stable.

Thanks for the link Barbara.  I tried to make bone broth a while back and followed instructions that I had downloaded.  I used beef bones and I baked them first and then cooked the whole thing for over 24 hours.  A lot of work and when it was done it didn't really taste that good.  I am going to give this a try.

I had tried it too, a few years ago, but we don't get that many bones & I had to save them up in the freezer for ages before I had enough. These would make it much easier for me.
